Help! just disgusted with advice from Pedia--DH and I always fighting ugh!

I have been posting on here about newborn tummy issues.  I have been given so much advice from the pediatrition about what to do about my 6 week old baby who is breastfed and supplemented with formula (not by my choice--she is not getting enough milk from me).

DD is now miserable ALL the time.  She is sooooo gassy and now every has trouble pooping.  Once again she is going on her 3rd day no poop and is in so much pain.  I followed the advice of the pediatrician who told me to insert a thermometer in her butt.  It worked last week but not yesterday.  Here is the kicker---the literature they gave me on colic states, "dont' make the mistake of insertin g suppositories or a thermometer--it can damage the anal sphinxter"  So they tell me to do one thing and their literature says another.

My daughter cries all day and so do I--DH doesn't want to come home at night to help anymore and thinks the baby's problems are from me.  He was NOT like this when she was first born.  I am soooo depressed and just need help for her and me!

Hi.  I'm not a mommy yet (I'm 13 weeks) but my best friend just had a baby that is going through the same thing you are.  She also used the thermometer method and ended up hurting her and causing her to bleed into her stool a few times.  She is fine though. After changing her formula like 3 times, she is now on something called Sobe soy formula.  And she is going more regularly.  May be it's the cow milk in the formula that is making her constipated.  Also, her pediatrician told her to mix some Kayro (sp?) syrup with water for her.  But of course you should ask your docter before you try it.  Good luck.
And sorry about your insensitve husband.  There seems to be a lot of that going around. :-/

What formula is she on? If you are giving her the standard formula she could have trouble breaking down the protein and could need the soy formula like isomil and I personally (and I've had 3) think that suppositories are a LAST resort. This is an old remedy some peds will say its bad for the bad and some say its ok if it eases the pain (it worked for me). 2xs a day give fill a bottle with 8ozs of warm water and just a tsp of Kayro syrup in each bottle and that will ease the gas. Try to give it to her early mid day like around 11 a.m. and make it the last bottle of the evening. It usually takes 2-3 days to kick in, but its progressive meaning you'll see changes during that time period. Oh, and its ok if she doesn't drink the hold 8ozs just make sure she gets at least 2. The 8ozs is just to make the correct Kayro syrup to water ratio and you can find Kayro at any grocery store. This remedy you can check with your mom and/or grandmother.
Good Luck

Both of my boys were bottle fed and became constipated, have you tried brown sugar in her bottle? my pedi told me "up to 3 teaspoons a day" 1 teaspoon in a bottle at a time, worked like a charm. I also used the infant suppositories(sp), only i would insert it just half-way,and only for a  minute,if that. You could also move her legs in a motion like she's riding a bike(while she's on her back) that sometimes gets things moving too.

When my oldest was having problems my mother in law told me to put kryo sryup in his bottle. It did work.  Then with our daughter she had very bad reflux and was told to put rice cereal in her bottle per gi doc.  it worked great she was not hungry and did not throw up, but did get consipated so she told us to put oatmeal cereal in her bottle when that happens.  That worked also.   I would demand your doc to give you a gi referral, they can help give you choices to help your baby.   Our daughter has been going since she was 3 days old.   Good luck and get someone if you can to give you a break.   Are you giving her gas drops at all?

My niece had severe stomach issues when she was 1st born.  Nothing worked.  One day when my sil was at the chiropractor she was telling them about the problems.  The chiro asked if she could see the baby.  Turns out she was out of alignment from the birth and they did some simple adjustment, she was seen twice, and had no more problems at all.  It may be worth looking into but make sure it is someone experienced with babies.  Good luck!

our kids who were formula-fed definitely were more constipated than the breast-fed ones. i think our ped recommended mixing a tiny amt of prune of cherry juice into their formula, or just fill a nipple with juice and let them suck it out. i believe karo as someone else suggested also works.

I went throught the same thing with my son (now 5)...I was not able to breastfeed and he was put on formula and spent the first 6 months constipated and crying...the first pediatrician I went to told me to put 1 tablespoon!!! of Kayro in every other bottle, which work, but then he never slept because he was on a sugar high constantly. The dr finially changed his formula and put him on Nutramigen which also work, but he had already develop a complex about having a bm and cryed everytime he had to go up until he was about 2 and half. His father was very impatient with me, was always telling me I need to shut him up, told me I was obvisouly not a good mother and things like that. Needless to say he is no longer in the picture. I know how hard it is espically when you aren't getting the support from your partner. Good luck to you and keep your chin up

I have 2 kids.My ds(now11)was bottle fed.In the hospital he was given one type of formula & I gave him another he was consipated for the first month.I kept switching nothing worked. My mil suggested I give him extra virgin olive oil. What!!I was confused,I asked pedia,& he said it was o.k.So I gave him just the tip of the spoon.I asked my mom about it & she told me she used it on me also, I guess this is an old(mexican) family remeady? So I used it since everyone was fine about it.I kid you not my son was passing gas all day long & when he fianally had a BM he did sooo much I thought he would never stop.He slept threw the night & whent pretty much after that. After that I only had to give it to him maybe 3x a month.I'm not saying do it but it worked for me...nanis

When my son was a baby, he would not poop. We dipped a q-tip in vasaline and stuck it in his bottom. We kind of moved it around a little while it was in there and every time... He pooped sooooo much. He felt much better after that. The doctor told us to only do it once every few days or so. The concern is that you dont want your baby to get used to pooping that way, you want them to learn how to get it out on their own. And only every few days if they dont poop on their own. You are going to find all kinds of opposite ideas on this subject. My son is almost five now and not anal damage and he poops has been pooping on his own since he was like 6 months old. Good Luck. I know how frustrating it can be.

I have posted recently too about my DD's tummy troubles. We had very similar problems to yours. I swithced her to nutramigen lipil (that is all she gets) it is completely broken down and has no cows milk protein or soy in it. It is ver expensive but def. worth it. My DD now only cries when she is hungry, tired or at normal fussy times  but is easily consolable. Our Ped. didn't really think this switch was necessary but I was convinced that she was having trouble digesting the formula. You really may want to consider trying this just to see if it works. Try giving it to her exclusively with no breast milk for 3 days just to see if it works. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my little one at that age.  They changed his formula, put him on Zantac and even told me I could offer a "little fruit", which I did.  But the one thing I found that worked best with the constipation issue was adding a teaspoon of karo syrup to the formula about every 12 hours or so.  He started staying regular then, I only had to use it for a few days and everything was fine.  I don't know if this will help but it is inexpensive, will not hurt them and is definately worth a shot.  Let me know how it goes if you try it...***@****

I took her back to the pediatrician today and they told me to do the Karo Syrup thing.  One teaspoon to how much forumula though?? Just once in a 12 hour period?  She has been crying ALL day non stop and I just cannot take this anymore--I am willing to try anything.

I ahd a friend whos little boy was in severe pain like you described and when she finally went for a second opinion when he was 5 months and was told he was severly lactose intolerant and gluten intolerant and it was binding him up. They took a stool sample and checked the amount of lactose in it so it is a simple test. Ask them to check. She was given medicated drops to give him before his breast feed to help digest this. She told me how awful she felt becaus it was the first time in months she had looked at him without crying and said he was like a different baby. Hope you get an answer. Good Luck
