Help with girl names!!!

by keeping our fingers crossed, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
Hello Everyone. The daily forum fills up so fast and it seems some questions get lost in there. You all are always so helpful so I thought I would as about baby girl name opinions.
Ever since we found out we are having a girl, we cant decide on any names...we like different names, dont want her to be in class with 4 other girls named the same.
What are some of your suggestions? Have driven myself nuts looking through books, watching movie credits, etc.
Have a super day!! :)

My friend just sent me this link... It is pretty cool. You can search names by popularity for decades, or by meaning and other ways.  I used it yesterday and came up with a bunch of names that I hadn't thought of but like.  We don't know yet if we're having a boy or girl, so it's really preliminary searching I'm doing... but it's fun.

Congrats on your pregnancy and may you and your little girl have a healthy pregnancy.

Let us know what you decide on. :)

God Bless,
Amanda

Some we like are

Channing
Sheridan
Ava
Kennsington
Cambrie

It's hard b/c I'm not a traditional name person. I've always like something different.

That's why I have a Kennedy and a Carrigan

by Morgan277, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
i love the name kaelyn, colette, kiernan, amy, sierra

by tiff27, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM

  Lily
  Riley
  olivia
  Emma

by ajaball, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
My husband and I like the names:

Ava Lauren

Kate Allison

Juliana Grace or
Madeline Grace

I think Ava Lauren is my favorite.  I like really feminine, traditional names

by amy g., Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
I don't think anyone is going to steal my girl names. They are:

Louisa
Maudie and
Beatrix

I have a 9 year old son named Henry. I really thought that would never be a popular name again. Now everyone I know is naming their baby boys Henry.

I knew when I named my daughters Madeleine and Olivia that there would be a million other girls with the same name.

by baby4Staci, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
when i was pregnant i loved the name Lilly (family hated it) now i see tons of little girls named Lilly..

Ava is one that is becoming popular and Isabella

everyone is doing the strange name thing.. How do you come up with names that are different??

by jifnif, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
To: keeping our fingers crossed
what about naming her after a relative?  Even a great great grandmother, those names sometimes are beautiful just for the simple fact they are after someoen in the family.

by anxioustobeamom, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
i always liked the names Kayla and Kylie. my girlfriend named her girl Karlie. i also like Emily. but if my husband and i have a girl (not pregnant, that i know if yet. 1/2 ww now) we would name her Ashylnn. Krisalyn was a name i saw and liked but my husband liked Ashley, so we combined the two. Olivia is a popular name where i work anyway. but it's pretty too.

by cutiemama, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
Put it this way, if you don't was DD to have the same name as the other girls in her class, then DON'T name her Emma, Olivia, Madeline, Madison, Sydney, Alex or Alexis just to name a few. There are at least two girls with these names in my DD's classes.  I happen to love all of them but they seem to be really, really popular right now.

by ajaball, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
To: amy g./everyone
I like Louisa.  That was my great-grandmother's name.  Henry is a great name.  If my husband would go for it, I'd like to name a son Henry.  He's hung on Elijah, though.

Ava is becoming a popular name, unfortunately.  I love it, but I don't want my daughter to be one of five in her kindergarten class!  I guess since I don't have any children yet I shouldn't stress about it yet!

by greenpixie, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM

I agree with the other names that everyone said about being popular.  I've been a preschool teacher forever and other names that I see a lot in my class are:

Brittany
Jordan
Jada
Brianna
Madison- or anything that can be shortened to Maddi
Emily
Regan
Riley

I like some of these names too, but I really like unique names.

by ateague, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
I'm having a boy, (Peyton James) but if it was a girl we were going to name her Cadence Ava (last name Teague - so we could call her CAT if we wanted to, but no one better call her Cadie!)  I love the name Grace, and I have two nieces named Ryan Elaine and Kyra Reese, they have cute names as well.

by amy g., Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
Hey, if you want an unusual name, what about my middle name...Genevieve?

by toyml99, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
We just went through the same things.  I was naming my little girl Jayme after her daddy James.  He was such a problem with middle names and I think we decided on Jayme Paige.  My name is Maura.  Which is unusual but pretty I think.

by mejoje, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
What we did when we found out we were pregnant was this... I am a Hines 57 girl (I am Scotish-Irish, Polish, Slovok, and English) and DH is Scotish and Italian. so sense the only one we had in common was Scotish we decided to name our son a traditional Scotish name. So I went on all the Scotish baby name sites I could and went through all the names and then we decided, his name is Duncan.

Also, I will share my favorite girl anmes:

1. Josaphine (I love this one cause you can call her Joey,
I think that is adorable for a little girl)
2. Carrigan
3. Gwendolyn

If we ever have a girl her name will actually be Carrigan Gwendolyn!!

But in this day and age it seems if you go for "old fashion" or traditional names she will be the only one in her class because of some of the names that are popular in the recent years have not been. Good luck.

by keeping our fingers crossed, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
well it has given me a lot to think about, thanks! It just seems there is no perfect name for us...yet. For sure her middle or first depending on how it sounds, will be Kate or Katie. (family name) We were stuck on Ava for a long time the first pregnancy (mc in 2004) but now it has taken off. Olivia is another, WAY too popular!!! Emelia or Amelia we like but they too are taking off....Stella is cute but just not sure.
We liked Lauren, very classic, but kind of boring. Our names together dont make anything cool either. Sister's babies are Myles and Madilyn (Madi) so we are staying away from M's.
I know it will come to us.
Love a lot of your creative ideas.
Carrigan is really pretty too....like 3 or 4 letter names though, for some weird reason.
Lots of food for thought! :) Thanks--Jina

WE JUST FOUND OUT THAT IS IS A GIRL AND WE WANTED SOMETHING DIFFERENT.  WE WENT AND BOUGHT THE BOOK WITH 100,000 NAMES AND I TELL YOU THAT THE BOOK HAS NAMES I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE.  BUT MY FAVORITE NAMES ARE;
OLIVIA
PEYTON
MCKENNA
MCKAYLA

THERE WERE A FEW MORE THAT WE LIKED THAT WERE VERY DIFFERENT, BUT I AM AT WORK AND CAN'T REMEMBER THEM.
AND I THINK WE ARE GOING TO NAME OUR LITTLE GIRL:
BAILEIGH
IT IS ORIGINAL, BUT WE HAVE A VERY DIFFICULT LAST NAME SO WE LIKE THE WAY IT SOUNDS WITH IT AND SO I AM 75% SURE THAT IS THE ONE FOR US.

Jeez, why is he making you wait over a month when you are already 19 weeks. That is frustrating!! Boy names came a lot easier to us, we had him named. This girl is more difficult. Guess when you know, you know.
:)

by amand221, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
I love the name Charlotte... infact I wanted to use it for our child arriving in early November (if it's a girl), but my MIL had a problem with it b/c of some horror movie with the same name... she's a nut case (my MIL that is).  Anyway, she has tainted my dh's thoughts on the name.  I love the name b/c I think it's feminine and I liked the nickname Charlie that goes with it that isn't as girly.  (It's also my grandmother's middle name- she passed a couple years ago). All I know is that it's going to be difficult picking the name.  DH and I haven't talked about names that much, but I fear it'll take awhile for us to agree on one.

But Charlotte Abigail is my favorite girl right now.  Who knows... maybe I can talk DH into it.  It's ridiculous to think that once the child comes, that his/her grandmother would still have the idea of a stupid horror flick... once she sees the baby, she'll begin to associate that name to the baby, not that name to something else.  Now if it were me or my DH that had that association, I can understand not chosing that name, but DH hadn't mentioned not liking it before his mother started talking bad about it.  It's just frustrating... this just came up on Monday night over dinner.    (Sorry to vent here- I'm still angry about the entire situation)

Good luck chosing a name that you and your DH like.  I'm sure whatever you chose will be perfect for her. :)

God Bless,
Amanda
Ps. Loved all the other names everyone wrote about too... lots to think about should we end up with a girl. :)

by baby4Staci, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
everyone should name their daughters...

STACI  with an "I" .. its the same.. yet different..

The one thing i hated growing up was that i couldnt have ANYTHING with my name on it.. it was always spelled different then how i do it..

people still struggle with my name.. they just cant believe it is spelled this way..

by keeping our fingers crossed, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM

Try being a Gina with a J. Jina....nothing with that name on it! BUT I have always been complimented on it being so unique and that is important to me.

Charlotte is a beautiful name.  That is stupid of you MIL.  I think people should keep their opinions to themselves when it comes to naming a baby.  I hated my SIL's name choice for her son, but it's her son!  My best friend named her daughter Gypsy Moon.  Not my favorite choice, but it's her child.  If someone asks me my opinion, I give it, but otherwise I don't say a word.  The only thing I will say is growing up with an unusual name isn't easy.  My name is Aja, pronounced Asia, and it was hard when I was little.  EVERYONE made fun of my name.  Even now, as an adult, I still get "Your name is what?  What was your mom smoking?!"  Especially because my sister's name is Rhiannon.  We're both named after songs.  When people find that out, they think my parents must have been pot-heads!

by amand221, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
To: ajaball
Thanks Aja.. By the way, Love your name.  :)

I don't think my MIL has any clue about how she hurt me by putting that name down and then getting her son (my DH) to agree with her.  It really shouldn't have surprised me though- she's been that type of person since I've known her.  Everything's about her.  I just forget sometimes when it's been awhile since I've seen her.

Same thing happened with my SIL and brother- they picked a name for their son that I didn't particularly like (reminded me of a weird kid I went to high school with), but now when I see him, I dont' think of that kid anymore, I think of my nephew.  I NEVER SAID ANYTHING TO THEM ABOUT NOT LIKING HIS NAME- EVER!!! I couldn't imagine doing that to someone.  If someone came to me and said "I really love the name "Blank", I'd try to find something good about it, even if it's just that it sounds decent with their last name.  I couldn't imagine saying (unless they ask my honest opinion of the name) anything less than enthusiastic, especially if they're excited about it.

Again, sorry to vent here.. I'm just glad I'm not alone in my thinking that sometimes it's best for people to keep their mouths shut if they don't have anything nice to say.

Have a great night ladies.
-Amanda
PS.  Staci- that would be funny if everyone started naming their DD's Staci (It's a pretty name)--And... I bet someone would put out products with your spelling of the name and the girls of this next generation would have an easier time. :)

by baby4Staci, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
To: amanda/everyone
Amanda, you are such a sweetie!! haha.. that would be so funny if everyone named their kid Staci! (even boys)

I hate HATE HATE when someone says they dont like the name I picked out.. That is why i wont tell anyone what i am using.  My sister kept on saying that if she ever had a little girl she wanted to name her Ryan and my cousin named her son Ryan.

OY..

haha

Goodnight ladies!!

OK, I've got you all beat.  My name is Abra.  It is the feminine form of Abraham and it means "earth mother" or "mother of many nations".  It still gets mispronounced all of the time, but I LOVE it.  I wouldn't dream of changing it even though when I was a kid I swore I would. :)  But people do always want to say "abracadabra" as if they are very first one that ever thought of that joke.  Nevermind that it's pronounced with the a long "A"...

Anyway, you could use it if you want.  I wouldn't mind. :)

by disneymom2, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
I agree, I would be carefull with sharing baby names.  I had picked out a name for my son and told everyone at a party I had.  At the party my friend was pregnant and ready to pop.  She told everyone she had no names picked out.  Well guess what?  When her baby was born a couple weeks later (a girl) she named her what I was going to name my son. So when I had my son 6 months later everyone thought I had copied them!  With this baby I'm keeping a tight lip on the name.  It took me 2 years to get over it.  I couldn't believe she would do that.

by mel8, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
I am exactly the same!  My friend had a name picked for her son as we did also.  Anyway I go to the hospital to meet her son and she sayd this is Joshua!  The name I had picked!!!  DH and I spoke about it and decided we weren't changing our name for anything!  So now there is 2 Joshua's 5 weeks apart!

Oh and if I ever have a girl I want to call her Alana Maree (but I am NOT telling my friend)

by anothergirl, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
I'm supposed to be having another girl - tomorrow at 5:30am in fact and to be honest both my daughters will have highly popular names and might be in Kinder with 5 others!

My first is Katelyn Ryan.
This baby will be Emma Nicole or Zachary Dane (just in case).

Most everyone I know agrees that you can go with a common name you love while mixing in uniqueness with the middle name. That way when your child is ready to be an individual they have a choice to go by something else.

A friend of mine named her little boy Joshua Cash and they call him Cash. It's so cute even though suprising different at first.

My other girl fav is Simone, but my husband just gave me that "you're crazy" look.

by fishka, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
I definately think that there should be no comment about what other people want to name there baby.  No matter how bad you think it is.  I have had a friend say that she thinks that the names that i like are too old and grandmaish, meanwhile she wants to name their baby girl to be JERSEY.  Yikes, but i just kept my mouth shut.

My Daughters middle name is Pearl after my grandmother & everyone loves that name. we also like Kennedy & Lilly!

by mejoje, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
Another thing that you can do is if there is a family member you want to name her after but not really like the name you can see what it is in another culture. My brother is John III and DID NOT a John IV so he picked Ian, his son is still named after him but is not a John.

It was funny last night DS and I walked over to mt sister's house and I was telling them about this post and my 8 year old nephew said "well then they don't want Nathen, there are 5 Nathens in my class!" and sis said that there are only 19 kids in the class!!!

Hey all. I have 2 girls and am the type that I too don't like the common names.

My oldest daughters name is Sylvia Veronika. Sylvia was actually the name of my moms best friend in Germany when she was younger, so we picked that out. Plus its a cool name :)

For my youngest, we actually did the whole baby name book thing. It was a book of over 30,000 names from around the world, so that was really cool in trying to find something uncommon. We had narrowed it down to 2. The one we did not choose was Mikayla. Which I am glad. Lots of those going around now, although a beautiful name!

Instead we named her Iona Jessenya. In 3 and a half years I have only HEARD of someone else having the name Iona. Hehe love the uncommon and considering that girl is about as off as they come it suits her.

Good luck with picking the name. And enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!! **Baby Dust** to everyone else!
