High HCG levels

by MarianneR, May 27, 2004 12:00AM
I went back to the doctor to check that my HCG levels were rising the way that they should.  I was told they should be at 1500, but in fact they were at 2118.  I asked the nurse if I was carrying twins and she said she couldn't say one way or the other, but it was a possibility and only the ultrasound would be able to tell which I won't be having for another 2 weeks.

Has anyone else had higher than expected HCG levels and had one fetus?  I don't know if I can wait 2 weeks to find out!

Mine were!! The first time mine were checked, they were at 2239 and then a week later they had went up to 34154, and I am only having 1 little one! Your # sounds fine to me!!! They always say that higher may mean twins, but it did not in my case!

There is such a huge raneg of what is considered high and low. For now I wouldn't count on twins. My hcg's also were higher than expected and I only have one little peanut!

I would think that when they say hcg's are higher for twins, they mean MUCH higher. I could be wrong, but like I said there is such a huge range for what is considered high.

Thanks guys.  You have put my mind at ease.  Either way it turns out, it will be a blessing, but 2 is going to take alot of energy!

emma- how many weeks were you when your hcg was at 2,000+??
just wondering.

marianne- i did a serch of normal hcg levels right before i got my levels back and found a site that gave stats on singlton numbers and multiple numbers. and to tell you the truth they weren't far off from each other.
the normal range for single went into the multiple range and vise versa.  the only difference i could really see was the low side. they said that at 4 weeks the lowest norm for singe was like 485 and the lowest norm for multiples was like 650.
(that isn't exact but needless to say that is why the nurse couldn't tell yiou if it was twins or not. it is possible for your numbers to be that of a single and it still be twins or the other way around.)
sorry sweets ya  gotta wait.

I was a little over 4 weeks, and then 5 weeks when I had my second one done. The only thinkg my OB told me about high #'s was that if it was really high then it could mean multiple or something is wrong with the baby. But nothing is a definite until they see the baby(s).

i've never heard that too high could mean something was wrong...really? so i wonder what that would indicate.
well you know it's just like it was all ready said the normal range is so broad.  i was 5w3d when i had my hcg done and teh range was anywhere from in the upper hundreds 800ish to 20,000+
i mean wow that is a huge range.  i was just happy to be in the middle.

Yeah, it's really too broad to be able to say anything until they do an u/s. The only comparison I can make is that my first check with the last baby, it was 10000 something and that baby wound up having trisomy 16. So I guess, yes a high # could mean a chromosomal abnormality, but not necessarily. There are too many what if's when it comes to pregnancy.

When I had my confirmation of being pregnant apointment (so I was still early) I had a reading of 780.  This worried the dr and I came back the next week and it read over 5000 and then I was brought in the week after that again and it read over 34,000

I am having so many tests b/c the dr thinks my baby is in trouble.  First the blood is too low and now he says the heartbeat is too slow.  I am having lots of blood and ultrasouds.  Sorry to change the subject, but does anyone know if these constant ultrasounds could be harmful to the baby???

all the reserch i have read and heard says that no u/s aren't harmful to the baby.

i hope everything turns out well for you.

Have you found out anything yet.  I am 4 weeks 3 days and mine were 3280.  I am supposed to go for an u/s on Monday because in Oct. I was diagnosed with a molar preg.  Please let me know.
