How can I get 2 month old on the bottle????? --- Open Forum

by Elicam, May 17, 2007 12:00AM
Hi Everyone.

I am breastfeeding my 2 month old and I am pumping a little everyday as I want him to take it from a bottle as I have some work commitments coming at, which he cannot attend with me.

My Dimelemma is that he won't take the bottle. MY DH has tried, I have left the room and he just screams.

I want to try with a sippy cup. Is he too young for this?? Has anyone else been through this?????

I have 2 weeks in which to get him to take the milk from a bottle. Please Please help.

I have looked int he archives but can't find anything for such a young child.

Thank you all and Please use as open forum

first of all he probably wont want to take it if its from you, or you are near by. they are smart little cookies!! i dont know if its good or bad but i did hear to rub some sugar water on the nipple. my son took both, but i went through many nipples to find the one he liked. they are picky sometimes. who will be watching your baby when you are away? maybe you can take him over there and have them try it without you around. my son wouldnt accept anything but boob from me at that age lol.

I didn't bf, but I use the advent Naturally's bottles they are supposed to be shaped like the mother's nipple, anyways you can only get them at CVS and Target, maybe at least go look at them.  Make sure they are the naturally's.

They say (and I don't know who "they" is) that avent bottles have a nipple most like the real thing.  I used these with my son and he did great with it.  I had to go back to school a month after he was born so i had the same dilemma.  I took the feeding i knew he would be the hungriest, pumped, put it right in the bottle and gave it to him.   Unfortunately I didn't have anyone else to give it to him at that time so I had to feed it to him but after a few days he did okay with it.

Thanks everone. I am using the avent naturally's and my DH is trying to feed him, but with no luck (DH will be with him when I am away).

Its weird because up until 4 weeks ago he used to take it.

At first he wouldn't latch onto my breast, so he started off with the bottle. I wish I had continued for at least one feed a day.

Has anyone tried with the sippy cup?????

I wouldn't put him on a sippy yet, he needs to suck, it is important to his developement.  Let him get really hungry and then have dh feed him.  Makre sure you leave well in advance.  If he know you are nearby he will hold out for the good stuff.

He won't take a sippy if he won't take the bottle.
My daughter did the same thing, and she didn't give in until 6 months.
You'll have to keep trying.  She finally took it from a bottle, from someone else, with Formula in it rather than breast milk.  Try that.  Good luck w/.this one...it can be very difficult.

Hey if you find the solution let me know. For various reasons my 4 month old had bottles on and offf for the first couple of months and would accept both playtex and NUK teats but was mostly nursed. Then I went to pretty much full time nursing with the odd bottle here and there, now he won't take a bottle at all unless he is starving and even then he will only take an ounce or two to tide him over until I get back. I have the avent bottles but he won't touch them, never has!

The formula is not as sweet as the breastmilk and they usually prefer the breastmilk. Also, the formula might cramp his tummy. Try letting your dh introduce the bottle to him when he is not real hungry and will not get upset so easily. Congrats on the bf, I'm a big promoter! Also, give it a little while. He will get the hang of it. Make sure that the nipple that you are using is soft and easy for him to nurse from. I used the playtex nursers, I guess they still make them.  Also, maybe a nuk shaped nipple. If he doesn't take it immediately, don't switch nipples right away. I got mastitis and had to be on antibiotics when my ds was 7 weeks old. He would cry and cry trying to take the bottle from me. When my husband got home, he drank it right down! I believe that he smelled me and wanted to nurse. Poor little guy was confused. Anyhow, a few days and I was able to feed him. Best wishes to you!

I'm having the same problem!  My three month old daughter is now refusing to take a bottle.  She took a couple six weeks ago and after that I stopped trying, now I think she's onto me and isn't falling for it agaiin.I don't know what to do because I have to go in for dental surgery in a couple weeks and she won't be able to breastfeed for the day.  You'd think they'd love the bottle since it's easier than the breast but I guess some babies are stubborn :)

i had the same problem. my ds took the bottle for 2 mos, then i started just nursing all the time and the next time i went to give him the bottle it was a no go. unfortunetly it still is and he's 8 mos. anyway, there is a catalog, One Step Ahead, they have a bottle that looks like it might work. it's called the Breastbottle Nurser, $14.95. i discovered it to late to order it. i didn't want to get him used to the bottle at 5 mos, so i don't know how well it works but it looks like no other bottle i've seen. it actually looks like a boobie. they have a website- www.onestepahead.com. i highly suggest checking it out. good luck.

if its a boy.. its too late... once they are given the breast.. they spend the rest of  their nataural born lives trying to get them. ok ok jk...

have you looked into finding the nipple thats most like your own ?  are you holding him the same way you hold him when brastfeeding? how about putting some breast milk on the nipple right before you use the plastic nipple?  i am getting ready to start doing the same with my son.. i hope he does ok ...

You frightened me. I was thinking OMG no.

Very funny.

I am going to the Peditricians today, maybe she can give me some advise, plus I am going to buy a whole load of different teats and keep trying until he takes one of them.

He also won't take a dummy (pacifier), he gags when he takes it. Fingers crossed I have a breakthrough soon.
