How can I tell if my infant is Lactose Intolerant?

by decogrl, Aug 22, 2007 08:22PM
Okay...several weeks ago, I started my DD, now 11 months on whole milk...at the urging of DH, even though the Ped suggested not to.  She took it well until this past week, she has had cramping and diarreah like poop after taking an 8oz bottle.  We also tried to introduce cheese and  the same thing happened.  Anyone out there with a Lactose intolerent baby and do they outgrow it?  I am putting her right back on her Enfamil Lactofree and am just feeding her plain potatoes, etc until this gets out of her system.  I should have never listened to DH!

She is way too young for whole milk to have been introduced that long ago. It does sound like she may be lactose intolerant, something that may not have happened if she hadn't been exposed to it so early.

I would put her back on formula and keep her on it for a while beyond her first birthday. Milk is not adequate for that young developing digestive tract or body in general that young. When you do go back to whole milk, buy Lactaid whole milk and see what happens.

Never listen to your dh, they are clueless ; )

Both of my boys had issues with milk based regular formula, we kept the first one on soy till he was 1 and then slowly mixed the milk in until he was only taking milk.  soun ds like her tummy is having issues with the milk.  I agree with Andi, go back to formula and wait a little longer.  My DH tried to push switching formulas for this little one as the Nutramigen is spendy and the Dr. told us we should be able to switch after the first few months.  I tried once and it was awful, now I just ignore him if he asks, Dr. said to wait a few more months due to other problems he's having.  Don't rush her, she'll be ready in time.

Hi, girl.  I'm sorry Ameera's going through this.  I agree though that she's a little too young for whole milk.  The most common lactose intolerance symptoms are:

Intestinal cramps or discomfort
Gas
Bloating
Diarrhea

I would keep her on the formula for now and I hope she feels better soon.
