How does low progesterone affect ovulation?

My periods have been irregular since I stopped breastfeeding my daughter 1 1/2 years ago (35-49 day cycles). My husband and I are trying to conceive a second child but my doctor says that my periods are irregular due to low progesterone.  My doctor advised me to take a prescription progesterone on days 16-25 of my menstral cycle and to continue trying to conceive while taking progesterone.  My questions are as follows: How exactly does low progesterone affect ovulation? Will taking prescription progesterone on days 16-25 of my menstral cycle pose any risk of birth defects if I were to conceive during that time?  Also does having low progesterone before pregnancy mean that my progesterone levels might be too low to maintain a pregnancy once I conceive?

progesterone is good it actually means for baby its the hormone thats keeps your body from rejecting the baby, they perscribe that to women who are at high risk of miscariage or other things too but thats the most commen, your body produces that the whole time you are pregnant but some women just need a little more, like taking prenatal vitamens they already have folic acid but it doesnt hurt to take an additional folic acid pill just to be safe.....: )I hope I was able to help
