I had gd for my 1st pg. Was controlled by diet and exercise. Stay away from sugars--just because a food says it is sugar free that is not true for most gestational diabetics--Our problem is the way the body digest the carbs in food. If your three does go negative then as the previuos poster said you will monitor your self with strips and blood tests. I was able to only gian 17 lbs on the prgnancy and had a 8 1/2 lb boy.--Was slimmer than when I got pg. You also feel pretty good on the diet and can tell when you go over your carb intake--you will get the feelings of lightheadness and just feel weird. Was able to have more u/s and als had a stress test every week from 33 weeks on. It was nice to see the baby so often--and the insurance pays for the extra u/s's because they are monitoring a problem.
Also to say I failed the 1 hr for the 2nd baby and passed the three hour and second BB went on to b 8 11.
I have had 5 babies. ON all of them my one hour was about 145. I passed the 3 hour on the first 4 preg and failed my last one. I was diagnosed with GD had to do the diet. Mine was very controlled by diet and my numbers were all fine. I gained NO more weight the entire pregnancy once I started on the diet. Basically I just cut my portions and ate healthy snacks. Eating fast food was the biggest NO NO. That was the only time my sugars went high. It forces you to watch your diet because they watch your numbers and you will have to take insulin if it can't be controlled by diet. It was a very good eye opener to me on what I eat and how it affects me.
oh u are so right, it is a real eye opener! And yes fast food is a no no, if i happen to eat something that is fast food while i'm out, it shows!
So i try staying to subway if i eat out. my numbers stay down with them.
And yes when reading the labels check for sugar and also carbs. b/c carbs turn into sugar. So if it says sugar free doesn't neccesarly mean sugarfree!
The cut off is below 140. That is what my Dr. said. Well, so much for hope!!! I will go do it tomorrow to get it over. I read all about it and I do not understand. I have none of the signs. I am not obese, actually pretty skinny when not prego, work out like crazy, eat as my co-workers would say "too healthy," so the only think I had is a 10 lbs baby girl with my first prego. Go figure!
So you are only a little over, did you fast? I really wouldn't worry too much about it. Most women pass the 3 hour anyway. I was the same way, skinny and pettie and consider myself a healthy eater. Even if you have it, you just have to be careful, diet and exercise will probably do so don't stress about it.
if you have it youll be ok. after the baby just take care of yourself eat healthy and excercise youll be fine it should go away. its so common im a nutritionist and i have seen this to be very common these days. i have a feeling ill have it but trying to eat healthy isnt easy when your pregnant even when your a nutritionist.
Hi Petanka! In my first pregnancy I had 139 and failed the 3 hour, in the second it was 159 and I passed the 3 hour. Go figure! I hope you don't have it or that you can easily control it with your diet. If you can't though, don't be afraid of insuline. Insuline shots hurt less than testing your bloodsugar and once you're on it, you get to eat more carbs!!!
Btw, they take blood 4 times for the 3 hour test and you can have 1 high number. And walking around can help keep your sugarlevel down. Good luck!
I go for my one-hour test in a couple of weeks. I had GD with my first almost 10 1/2 years ago. It was controlled by diet and exercise. If you do have it, I can't stress enough how important it is to really stick to the diet and make sure your numbers are good--your baby processes what your body doesn't or can't and this can result in a big baby with a large trunk. I didn't gain too much weight myself (think it was about 35 and it was all off at my first post-partum appointment), but my baby was delivered via c-section almost a week early and he weighed 9 pounds.
Well, I didn't have to fast but they told me no food or drinks one hour b4 test and I ate a bowl of rice crispy exactly one hour b4 test so I think that's why I failed. No, you don't have to fast but maybe schedule your appointment early in the morning and eat your breakfast afterward.
To me, it's not worth failing because the 3 hour is just a pain (time consuming). I hope you will pass.

If you do end up having g/d, it's not to bad. I have it. You go by a diet, eating each of the food groups in each meal, and staying away from sugar. he/she will try that first to keep your sugar down, he will prescribe a monitor and strips to test yourself. Now if that doesn't help he'll presribe the insulin, and it doesn't hurt to stick yourself or anything, alil pain afterwards but nothing u can't handle.
I had to go in with the diet just once a month then he checks your log u keep.
With insulin i started going every wk, then if i'm maintaining my levels i got to move up to 2 wks. next wk when i go back if it's still good he'll go 3 wks.
Well good luck!

Dollchina: I am not going to worry as much since your was at 164 and you passed the 3 hours. Thanks

Thank you all anyway!
