i am not sure of the exact amount, its in my prenatal vitamin.  but i'm sure if you told your dr you were trying to conceive they would put you on a mutli.  if you dont have a dr i am pretty sure you can get a prenatal at the drugstore that has the appropriate amount in it for you and your angel.  Baby dust!!!

My friend's prescription prenatals had 1000 mcg of folic acid.  I used Meijer brand prenatals and they contained 800 mcg.  So, in addition I purchased a bottle of plain folic acid.  I took 1/2 tablet which added 200 mcg to get my 1000 mcg per day.

Jifnif is correct, just make sure the multivitamin is for woman, or you can try telling your OB/GYN that you are planning on conceiving in the near future and they may write you a prescription for pre-natals.

Good luck!

I take 1 mg daily.  You ar to take it while ttc as well as thru your pregnancy.  I have heard that it is not recommended that you take more than that unless you have been prescribed a higher dosage by your doctor.

March of dimes says to get 0.4mg (400mcg) of folic acid while trying to conceive and 0.8mg (800mcg) while pregnant.  Most prenatals contain 1mg (1000mcg).

Just as an FYI, if you've had problems with neural tube defects in previous pregnancies, you should take around 4,000 mcg of folic acid.  Taking too much folic acid isn't really so much of a problem.  The only issue is that it may cause is masking a deficiency in one of the other B vitamins.

As far as dosage for a "normal" pregnancy, you will see reccomendations starting at 600 mcg to 1000 mcg.  It seems to be dependent on what the dr. feels is best.

You should be taking one folic acid supplement/day. I was told more than that is not necessary. Once you get pregnant, you should take a prenatal vitamin with the folic acid for 12 weeks.
This is what my doctor told me...hope this helps
