Hyperstimulation leads to removal of ovary, pregnancy still ongoing (9 1/2 weeks

I am 37 years as of 6/1 and am going through IVF pregnancy. I found out that I was pregant after being hospitalized for hyperstimulation.  A few weeks after released and 9 weeks into pregancy my ovary twisted and I went to the ER, as advised by my IVF doctor.  After staying overnight (12 hours passed), morphine injections every two hours,  they performed laparoscopy, removing one ovary. I had a sonogram the next day and the baby is reportedly doing fine.

Could removal of the ovary been prevented had I been treated the day before?  How confident can I be about this pregnancy being sucessful and healthy? How will this impact me having children in the future with one ovary?  How will decreased estrogen levels impact me as an aging woman?  What are the questions that I need to ask my physician?

By the time it gets that stimulated to send you to the hosp. on morphine, it's usually already past saving. Sorry you had to go through all that, but hopefully this baby will be fine, and you still have one ovary left to have more babies right. Just give yourself time to get over it. I'm sure it really was traumatic.

My sister lost her ovary to torsion when she was only 17, and went on to have a baby when she wanted to years later (on only her first try!)  The ovary that is remaining covers for the one that was lost, even ovulating every month. There is nothing to be done once the torsion happens, the blood flow to the ovary has been cut off by the twisting and the ovary has died, which is where the pain comes from.  Don't think there was any way to prevent it; even if you had not had hyperstimulation, the torsion would have done it.  I don't know what it means for future hormone issues later on, I will say that my sis is 47 and has not had any menopausal signs yet and most women in America go through menopause by an average age of 51, so it has not affected her much to only have one ovary.

Thanks for your feedback.  I went to the doctor's yesterday, and had a sonogram. The baby is doing well (seemed to have slept through the trauma!) at 173 BPM and approx. 3 cm in size.  I am fortunate that this was possible!  So, eventhough I am short an ovary, it looks to be that I am gaining a healthy baby!
