I Can't Sleep!!! HELP!!

by luv_babies, Jul 20, 2006 12:00AM
Good morning everyone! I need help! I am 7w 5d and I cannot sleep! Benadryl doesn't do anything, Simply sleep, changing pillows, warm milk, tea, nothing. If anyone has any suggestions, please throw them out here! I thank you in advance! I think I will also put a call into my dr today, but I don't want to be told I have tried everything.

I was the exact same when newly pregnant. I think some was nerves and just plain excitement at finally being pregnant. Nothing I did helped either. However at about 10 weeks I was sleeping like a baby and now I cannot keep my eyes open past 9:30. :0 It does get better.   How many Benadryl are you taking prior to bed?

by girlybuff, Jul 20, 2006 12:00AM
I'm 32 weeks and can't sleep now but in my first trimester all I did was sleep.
You certainly have tried a lot but definitely talk to your doctor.  Ambien is supposedly safe to take (short term)although I'm not sure about taking it before your first trimester is up.  Unfortunately, there aren't many options.
I hope you get some relief.

Kelly- I have been only taking one, not every night, don't want to become dependent on it. Maybe I could try 2?

Girlybuff- I have taken Ambien before and that worked wonders for me, but yea, I don't know if it's safe in pregnancy.

It is very safe to take during pregnancy and are not habit forming. When I need to take them I always take 2-3 and my ob said that is ok. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

I have been prescribed Ambien in my last trimester but was told not to take it too close to delivery because of possible breathing issues with the baby.
It's a Class B drug, which means it's very likey not to harm the baby, however, any drug in the first trimester when the baby is doing all of the initial development, is discouraged.

My dr told me that anything you take to help you sleep can become habit forming. I will try 2 tonight and see. Thanks! I was happy to read that you had the same thing until about 10 weeks. That would mean only two more weeks to go. :)

To brighten your day it gets way worse in the 3rd tri lol. I am sorry you are unable to sleep. I have heard that waiting until you are deas tired to go to bed is supposed to help and when you take a nap dont nap in you bed but nap on the couch instead. If you are having trouble getting comfy try getting a body pillow or sleeping with a pillow between your legs for me the pillow between the legs made me have really really really bad round ligament pain but everyone is different. Good luck getting some sleep the 1st tri is when I slept alot now I just can seem to get comfy and I am in pain I wish I could get some sleep though. Good Luck!

Sorry, luv.  I did not really have this problem in the first trimester, but it sure is hitting me now.  Two night ago I only got 3 hours! I haven't really figured out a good solution.  I don't like taking things so I just suffer through it.  I figure I might as well get used to not having a good nights sleep.

With my last pregnancy, I couldn't sleep, and I can't sleep now either.

My OBG suggested (again) Unisom (spelling?), you can buy it over the counter at ShopKo.  You take a 1/2 tablet, and it's not habit forming, at least it wasn't for me, and it's completely safe, even during your first trimester.

Good luck.

I had trouble sleeping throughout the 1st and 2nd trimesters.  Get to a swimming pool if possible.  After a swim, I am knocked out! I have not had trouble since.  Needless to say it kept my weight gain at bay. ANyway it works for me for sleep

by Lunastella70, Jul 20, 2006 12:00AM
My doctor also told me to take Unisom and said it was OK.  I had the most horrible 1st trimester.  Could not sleep and was nauseous 24/7.  He did not want to prescribe anything and said Unisom would help.  I am still taking it.  1/2 a pill every night.  Definitely not habit forming and won't cause any problems with the baby.  I tried weaning myself off it but the nausea is still there...so the days I don't take it I feel miserable.  Doctor said to continue as it poses no problem.  I am 27 weeks pregnant with a baby girl!  Got my amnio results about 11 weeks ago and everything is fine.  Hope you can get some sleep as it just helps you maintain your sanity :)  Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I think I will try the 2 Benadryl since I already have it. If that still doesn't work, I'll try the Unisom. I will give it the weekend and call my dr on Monday if I am still having problems. Thanks a lot!  I know that I will not be able to sleep in the third trimester, but I thought I was supposed to be sleeping all the time now!! :) Thanks again!

Just wait until the second trimester. I sleep a lot more now than before. I sleep in on the weekends and then the dog and I take a 3 hour afternoon nap and then off to bed at 9:30!!! :)
I sure love sleep. Figure I better get it in now before the 3rd trimester hits, then the baby arrives!!!

by myproblem, Jul 20, 2006 12:00AM
Chlortrimeton, also known as chlorpheneramine maleate is a safe antihistamine during pg. I sometimes have better luck falling asleep with it than with benadryl.

You're so funny! It's not that bad on the weekends because I can sleep in, but during the week it's getting pretty ridiculous! I have a hard time waking up at 6:45 and I go to bed between 9-10. Oh well, I will look forward to the 2nd trimester! Maybe tonight I will take the Benadryl with warm milk and get a double whamy....I have this ridiculous funeral to go to tomorrow that my SIL and MIL made a BIG dramatic production cuz Jon and I weren't coming (don't want to take off work) sooo now we are going. I better get some sleep to give my mood the best possible chance!!!

Is that sold as another brand name, or just that generic name?

Im in the same boat. Im still in first trimester and wake up at 3:00am every night! Its crazy like clockwork... same time within minutes. I tried something different last night... I decided to take my prenatal vitamins at night instead of morning and maybe its a coincedense but I slept pretty much through the night. It may be due to b vitamins because they lower stress and relax you.

I had the same thing at around the same time for about a week to a week and a half.  i was exhausted and couldnt sleep.  it did pass though.  I remember my last pregnancy, it came back in the third trimester.  Not sure what you can do it about it- sorry i cant be of any help.  i just hope you are like me and it will pass.  Are you napping during the day?  If you are, then it may impact your sleep pattern at night.

by BlueBirdSchless, Jul 21, 2006 12:00AM
Ug-this is me not sleeping now! I'm in my third trimester and not really uncomfortable, just can't sleep, but I am really tired and want to! These meds sound tempting, I want a Lunesta butterfly:)

Chlortrimeton is the brand name, and chlorpheniramine maleate is the generic name. I don't know of any other brands, but you could check with your pharmacist.
