I failed my test

by Debra_Maine, Mar 21, 2005 12:00AM
I'm so upset. By 3 points. Here were my numbers:
fasting (s/b less than 95)   I was 98
1 hr. (s/b less than 190) I was 203
2 hr. (s/b less than 165) I was 140
3 hr. (s/b less than 145) I was 56

You have to have two of the ranges be high and the 98 put me over by 3 points. I can't tell you how sad I am. I know those of you who have it say it's not that bad, but I have been so hungry this past week trying to eat healthier. Seems like there is nothing to snack on when I'm hungry. I don't like cold cheese :o(
Oh well, I'll hopefully meet with the nutritionist soon because I don't know what I'm supposed to be eating till then.

Stacie, would you be able to send me that diet?

I am sooooooo sorry. Your #'s were about the same as mine. Not really high but high enough to make you do this crappy diet. Your dietician will give you your carb limits and calories , fat ect. The only thing I pay attention to is the carbs. I am really sensitive in the mornings and they usually really limit your carbs in the mornings because most people are. I usually eat a couple of peices of bacon and a peice of toast( the low carb kind) or some eggs. I love my oatmeal but that is something I had to give up for now because it would spike my sugars. But you may be different. They also sell a low carb yogurt that is really good. As far as lunch she limits my carbs to under 45 so I do not really have a hard time finding something. And at supper she allows 105 carbs but I have to not eat that much because they go up. You learn through your testing what will send your sugars up. After you do that it is not that bad. But I do know that you said you do not like the artificial sweeteners and most of the low carb stuff had those in it. But eating some protein with your carbs helps level them out so if I eat my snacks which consist of 3 a day at 30 carbs max each one I always eat some cheese afterwards. It all sounds difficult but your dietician will really help you out alot. Stay away from fruit juices! They are loaded with sugar. Funny thing is that I can eat fruit and it really has not effect but that juice does. Good luck and if you have any questions I will try to answer if I know or I will look it up in my books and try to find it! Danielle

yes ma'am. putting it in my purse right now to remember to send it to you when I get home.

it's not that bad, really....

get laughing cow cheese spread... it's great on celery.. it makes a really good snack. other than that I eat fruit, crackers, and string cheese for snacks.

hang in there hon. you'll be ok!! :o)

now there are 3 of us on here having to watch our sugars so we can all help each other.

Thanks you guys. I will have tons of questions as soon as the shock wears off. The nutritionist my doc wants me to go to isn't covered on my insurance so she suggested the diabetes center. I have to call them tomorrow since they are closed now. It's scary because until I go I don't know what to eat. I know I can't have my oj with calcium anymore and I'll switch to toast with peanut butter for breakfast instead of my yogurt, but I don't know the limits for the day. I'll try to do my best till I can get an appt, but the diet you are sending Stacie will be a tremendous help till they can get me in at the center. Thanks again you guys. It helps so much to have you to talk to.

P.S. Are you ever allowed cake? It may seem like a silly question, but I'll be having a shower soon.

Funny you ask about the cake. The weekend after I was diagnosed I had my sons b-day party and I asked her if I could have some and she said yes. She said said to eat some sort of protein afterwards to level it off. Well needless to say I ate a big piece and some ice cream. I took my sugar an hour later like I am suppose to and it was only 116. So everything effects you different.  The goal she gave me was to be under 140 after one of eating. Of course she likes it a little lower and mine is always under 120 so....... I am sure the menu Stacy is sending will help alot as it is alot easier to be able to look at something and figure it all out. It will all work out fine, you will see. I would just for now stay clear of the fruit juices ect. Eat just about any meat you just have to watch it when it is breaded ect. And veggies are good you just have to watch the potatoes sometimes. They say sweet potatoes are better than regular. And watch your bread intake and cookies ect. But hey, don't think for one second when we have our family easter dinner I won't be eating some pie! My goodness, I have been doing so good I deserve it! Danielle

The numbers are quite different in Canada
after a hour you should be 10.6 mine was 10.9  wasnt even out by a whole number and they stuck me on it.
Its not that bad after 2 weeks you are settled into a routine and know what and how much to eat , you have snacks so that helps,
My diet was like shubunkins watching the carbs they will take in to consideration  weight, age etc..

Good Luck

k- give me about 10 minutes and I should have it to you. :o)

by Debra_Maine, Mar 21, 2005 12:00AM
I know I'll adjust, it just would've been so much easier not to have to count everything and I sure will miss pizza! But it's only for 10 weeks. The bright side is I'll have an u/s or two and be monitored more closely. And the dr said he won't let me go much past my due date now. Before I had the gd, he said he wouldn't let me go past 2 weeks past my due date, so that's one consolation. I'm so ready to meet him already! Thanks again, you make me feel better. I was scared that if I had ANYTHING I wasn't supposed to, I'd do irreparable damage to the baby. Stacie, you have my work email, so I'll get it in the a.m. Thanks again.

Hey you can have pizza buy the thin crust  check on the back of it , counting carbs  example: 2 slices -30g carbs
                              5 grams of fibre
in order to find the carbs you deduct the fibre and thats your grams.  they will tell you how much at breakfast, snack, dinners and suppers

She is talking in grams. Quite a difference from what you were allowed. I'm curious to see what I'm allowed. I planned my meals for tommorow and I'm at 150 carbs for the day and only 1600 calories. I need atleast 2200 to maintain my weight. I'm told I shouldn't lose weight at this stage but last week when I watched my carbs I lost 3 pounds. I don't know how to eat this way without artificial sweetner, but I just won't eat it. I feel so screwed.

by Stacie30, Mar 21, 2005 12:00AM
it's not as strict as it sounds. really, it isn't. I've found when I get a sweet craving an apple or an orange makes it go away. you'll do just fine. if you want to email me with your home email then I'll send it to you there, otherwise I guess you'll have it there tomorrow. :o)

Yep, that's grams. I am allowed 3 snacks a day of 30 each, breakfast 30, lunch 45 and supper 105. But I do not eat that much at supper because it will spike my sugars. My calories allowed are 2400. I do not keep up with that though. She said it was not as big of a deal because I am not overweight.. I have lost 10 pounds since starting this diet. She said that is normal.so as of right now I have gained about 20 pounds and I have 4 weeks left. And I still am losing. She said its not affecting the baby though just coming off me and I can tell it.

i'm sorry hun....but think of it this way, by the time the baby is born you will all ready be knowlegable in the skills and tools it takes to shed those baby pounds.

(i try to always look on the bright side)

I just wanted to tell you to be sure you eat enough carbs till you can see somebody because if you don't you may get hypoglycemia and you surely do not want that. When I first found out that I had it I ate hardly any carbs and that day I had an appointment with the dietician and she was showing how to use my meter and when I took my sugar it was really low and she told me to leave straight there and get something to eat. So if you start feeling dizzy and shaky or sweating you may need to eat a little something with carbs in it.

Remember i asked you if you tested for ketones to? I tested my blood 4 times a day and every morning took a urine sample and had to test with a strip for ketones  that then indicated by colour if i was eating too little carbs for the previous day   I think u said u didnt do ketones.

No, I do not do that. She has never brought it up. Do you think they test for that when I go in there? I start going every week next week.

by cinnamonheart, Mar 22, 2005 12:00AM
When I went to the diabtetic clinic they never did it, they weighed you , talked about your diet, check your sugars and that was it,It wouldnt hurt to ask about it though, Ask them  how your suppose to know if your getting enough carbs? See when I took the urine sample I would stick the test strip in and check the colour if it turned a purplish colour it meant not enough carbs  sometimes i would go a little pinkish-- but you needed three tests in a row then they would have you come back and check your diet again.
