I need help... I'm seriously at my wits end

my daughter has been so colicky and it just started this past week and everything I do does not help and my doc won't change my formula ( even though I have told her that Aubree arches her back,, scrouches and crys after I feed her) so I have decided to try to change formulas...  I have talked to a friend of mine who is an RN and she says my doctor does not know what she is talking about obviously there is something in the SImilac that my daughter doesnt like or is causing her pain... she recomended the similac alimentium but it is 28.99 a can and since my doc wont write me a script for it wic wont change my formula either.. has anyone else tried any other formula for colic?

I haven't had the actual "colic" problem, but from what you describe, your daughter may have Acid Reflux.  My youngest had it and now has to take Prevacid.  She did exactly what you are describing.  The medicine really helps her.  I would def talk to your doc about the Acid Reflux.  My ped said that all babies get it to some degree.  It just varies with how bad.  Which makes sense if you think about it, because all babies spit up.

similac does make a colic formula its the altimentum formula .. it is 30 bucks for a 16 oz can and in order for wic to pay for it you have to get a script from the doc and my doc won't switch her to it.. she says shes gaining weight and seems to be healthy on the similac advanced with iron.. I told her she is constantly crying.. she arches her back after feedings and is always pulling at her feet and pulling them towards her belly... and she said changing the formula wouldnt help.. but I have talked to other moms who have colicky babies and they said it helped them...

Im not sure, but maybe try soy. It may help alittle. Or just buy a can of the  alimentium to see if it helps and then go back to your doc. and tell them that it is helping and you need him to write a script for wic. Good Luck

arching of the back is a sure sign of reflux - take her to a specialist ASAP.  Your doctor is an idiot.  My dd was diagnosed with reflux just because of the arching.  She never had a problem again after her diagnoses was treated.  Good Luck.

PS my dd was on similac the entire time - you may not need to change formula at all. Your poor baby is crying because she cannot digest her food and it is hurting her tummy.

I agree w/ can'twait.....I really think it's the Acid Reflux.  But I didn't have to take my baby to a specialist.  My ped knew exactly what it was and prescribed one medicine at first.  Can't remember the name of it.  It helped at first but then we had to switch her to Prevacid.  Wow, what a difference that made.

I cannot stand when a doc does not listen to the patient/mother of the patient.  Makes me mad.....Can you switch docs??

They did the same with my dd - they had her on zantac which was gross tasted horrible too then they switched her to prevacid and it works great. She likes the taste too.

Without proper testing, a diagnosis of reflux is nothing more than an educated guess.  It might be the correct guess...but its a guess.

You can try changing formulas on your own, but be warned--often times the symptoms go away after a while, even if you do nothing at all different.

Yeah, I think it was Zantac come to think of it (the first medicine).  It was liquid, whatever it was and I had to give it to her every 12 hours.  Now, I give her 1/2 a tablet of Prevacid every 12 hours and it helps her a lot.  My doc said that often times babies grow out of this on their own and won't always have to take the medicine, but I am keeping her on it for now.  She's now 14 months old.  She has a hard time when I don't give it to her so I can only guess for now.

Oh, and she loves Prevacid too.  She just drinks it right up.  I still put it in a syringe with water :)

That is what I do but just once a day - put the little pill in teh syringe with water - she loves it.  I refused the MILK scan to 100% proove she had reflux.  I did go to a specialist at CHOP and he said that he could diagnose her just by her action and symptoms.  I would not allow them to do that invasive test to her.  She has been through enough.  They are going to slow down her asthma meds starting in September and hope to have her off through the winter and then do the same with the prevacid when that is done.  The doctor seems confident that she will outgrow as well.
