I am not a fan of the IUD.  Simply because of the function if performs.  It doesn't do anything to your natural cycle.  So you ovulate, can fertilize and egg (which is a baby) and when the little baby swims to the uterus to implant, the IUD is coating the uterus making the walls hostile and the baby has nowhere to go, so it dies.  It is abortion.  I'm not sure where you stand on the issue, but personally I feel it's wrong.  Taking birth control pills or using condoms is different because with birth control, you do not ovulate (most of the time) and with condoms, your body performs normal cycles but the sperm never meet the egg.  I've also heard that IUD can make you more suseptable to infection because it absorbs chemicals and fluids that would otherwise be disposed of naturally.  Good luck!

Actually there are various ways the IUD works, here is an excerpt from the Mirena website:

"The intrauterine system (IUS) is one of the most effective birth control methods. The protection it gives is comparable to that of sterilization and begins immediately after insertion into the womb.

The contraceptive protection offered by the IUS is based on the local effects of the device and the progestin on the uterus.

The plug of mucus in the cervix becomes thicker. This prevents the sperm from entering the uterus and also provides additional protection against pelvic infections.

The cyclic build-up of the uterine lining is substantially reduced, there is a marked decrease in its thickness. This makes it impossible for an egg to become embedded in the lining of the uterus.

The intrauterine system does not provide protection against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases.

If you want to have sex with a partner you know little about you should also use a condom. "

This is not unlike the BCP's here is an excerpt also found online regarding BCP's:

"Birth control pills fool the body into acting as if it's pregnant. Birth control pills, also called oral contraceptives (OCs), come in two forms: the combined OC, a combination of two synthetic hormones, estrogen and progestin; and, the minipill, which consists solely of progestin. Combined OCs are more commonly used, though both kinds are available through health care providers. The combination pill prevents ovulation by suppressing the natural hormones in the body that would stimulate the ovary to release an egg. By taking this estrogen throughout the month, you insure that no egg will be developed or released for that cycle. Progestin thickens the cervical mucus, hindering the movement of sperm. Progestin also prevents the uterus's lining from developing normally; so, if an egg were fertilized, implantation is unlikely. "

As you can see, they both form similar functions. The end result is the same, the goal for using them is to prevent unplanned pregnancy from occuring. But nothing is 100% effective except abstinence.

I had the IUD for just over a year and loved it. There are people who are not good candidates for the IUD and with any birth control, there is a failure rate. In the unlikely chance a person does get pg while using it, given the nature of the IUD, it may end in m/c. Check out various contraceptive websites, consult your doctor or your local planned parenthood for more information.

thank you for your posts. Honestly i didnt like the idea of a egg being fertilized but not being able to implant, i would feel more comfortable knowing the egg didnt get fertilized at all. Eeven though its merely a baby yet. i actually thought the IUD blocks the sperm from even getting to the egg, but so far from what i learnt fertilization is very likely but implantation is'nt. Couldnt stand to know my egg was fertilized but couldnt implant. Even thoug it may have happened naturally to hundreds of women without them evening knowing and it gets washed out with AF, but to know my IUD caused it would suck!!! Well i have heard bad and good and its that way with anything BC  inquire about correct!!! But it seems that with the IUD ur chances of fertilization is more likey due to u still realeasing a egg. I have heard women say they love it but buts its probably becuz they didbt know they could have possibly gotten preggo. My SIL had one in for 4 and a half years and she got pregnant on it, they had it removed right away..she just gave birth 6 weeks ago. All in all i appreciate each of u gals posts. greatly!!!

The way I looked at it was that it was doing its job. It has been said over and over again that there are a few different ways it works, not specifically one or another. One possible way MAY be preventing implantation, or it could do with the thickening of the cervical plug, thus preventing sperm from ever reaching the egg.

At any rate, I am happy you got the information you needed to make your decision.

i would feel more comfrotable knowing it prevented egg realeasing all togeather haha, its so conveient the coil because u dont have to worry to take anything everyday, its afective imeediately after insertion and u are fertile right away. but the thing that scares me is knwing it may get fertilized. i have also heard of the coil being embedded into ur utertine linig and it may need surgery to be removed or possibly infertility or sterilisation, is this true? i have red it on a teens website, well here goes, i got the IUD inserted today, i wish i had asked theses questions before but i was so comfortable with my decision i just went ahead with it. We were actually TTC, but we changed our minds due to a number of reasons.

Those are worst case scenario and very rare occurances. Similar to the potential stroke and clots seen with BCPs. Every form of contraception has side effects, good and bad. As I said, I loved my IUD, it worked well (which is impressive as I have been pg twice through condoms) and I recently had mine removed. We will be actively TTC after the first of the year and that was one of the "perks" to the IUD, fertility returns immediately.

You should have scheduled a follow up appt with your OB for 30 days from now to check its placement. If there are going to be problems with perforation or embedding, it generally occurs soon after insertion (but the good news is that it is EXTREMELY rare) and has more to do with placement issues than anything else.

Do some more reading, you can find a wealth of resources online. I would stick to medical websites, as with anything , you will find people who like to scare to poo out of others with unfounded claims.

Good luck. If you aren't comfortable with your decision, you can always get it removed. The procedure is quick and easy. Take some time to research your options, get actual facts, and then you can make an informed decision : )

I hope everything works out for you!

thank you again for your post. i actually have a appt to check on it in Jan. i have done some more research and have learnt that those things happening are very rare...but the possibiliy of ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, or eggs not being implantated are higher with the IUD BC than any other BC. But i feel better knowing how rare it is

I chose the bc pill because it's highly effective and ovulation does not take place.  I thought about the IUD, but the only thing the IUD does is not allow implantation to occur.  So, you could technically be pregnant month after month, or so, and I just didn't want to think about birth control like that.  One other perk about the pill v. IUD, is that your period is always on time.  No surprises, and it is lighter, too.  Just my two cents.  Good luck with your decision.

I loved my IUD, it was low maintainence and worked fantastically. also if you get the copper T you are not using hormones.  that was a big selling point for me, I could be confident any mood swings were mine and not related to synthetic hormones.  another thing I liked was the effectiveness (99.8%, .1% better than any hormone therapy).  and it is good for 10 years.  how ever, because I knew I could afford to have it removed, I could not afford to have it replaced, and I blew off  3 years of pap smears.  I loved that little copper T so much... I kept the IUD in longer than recommended, and today it was removed because I got a deep uterine infection, usually only related to the IUD.  Because of my negligence, and fear of losing my IUD I can never use an IUD agian.  I lost the best form of birth control I ever had. I would whole heartedly endorse using the IUD, just take care and get your smears and replacement done in a timely manner.  If I had had it removed when I was supposed to I would have gotten another one as soon as I had the money to get one.  Aside from my niativity, I had no complication with My IUD, the first few months I cramped a little more than usual, but that subsided, and as far as my husband feeling the string, it hurt him at first, but eventually he toughened up-- also he enjoyed the perks, sponteneity, no condoms for him, or having to stop and quickly insert a sponge (correctly).  And in response to the last coment, there is no proof that an egg gets fertilized while you have an IUD, I did not have any unusual periods, my body naturally got on a 28 day cycle and the copper in IUDs kills sperm.  I consider myself a Christian and no where in the bible does it say no birth control, I felt morally as well as biologically safe from unwanted pregnancy.  I hope this feedback helps you in your quest to find the right birth control for you.

How long does it take for your period to come after the IUD is removed. My period is a week late, i am not pregnant. Could the removal of iud cause my period not to come?
