Identical Twins

Anyone that is having twins, it is imperative to find out if they are fraternal (usually 2 placentas) or indentical (one placenta).  Identical twins (also called monochorionic) carry many risks.  Identical twins pregnancy needs to be considered high risk and referred to a perinatologist (a maternal-fetal medicine doctor.  15% of identical twins develop TTTS (twin-to-twin transfusion syndrom (syndrome)).  It is an unequal blood flow between the 2 babies.  Left untreated mortality for the babies is close to 100%.  My wife had this and is doing fine after surgery on the placenta.  It is diagnosed by a measurement of amniotic fluid in each sac.  One sac would habe more than 8cm of fluid and the other less than 2 cm.  One baby appears stuck on an ultrasound.  For more info you can go to www.tttsfoundation.org or www.fetalmd.com.

I spoke to a friend of mine last night that informed me that a mutual friend had just lost twins.  She was 6 months along and the amniotic fluid broke in one of the twins sac and they had to deliver both.  One was stillborn and the other died the next day.  It is very tragic.  I cannot imagine the pain.  Good luck to you.
