I'm on Birth Control how long do I have to wait?

by Ready4aBaby, Mar 02, 2003 12:00AM
My husband and I are ready to start a family.  Before we start, I have a couple of questions that I need answers for, We are wanting to start this pregnancy out on a good healthy note.  1).  I'm 35 yrs old and have been on the pill since I was 17 yrs old.  I'm currently on Ortho-Trycycline 28 day.  Is it ok to stop taking the pill and try to get pregnant immediately? Or should we use another form of BC while the pill is getting out of my system?  If I need to wait, how long?  and what other method is the safest?
2). I am currently taking Minocycline 100mg per day for acne. I know that I need to stop taking it but wasn't sure how long it took to get out of my system.

Since I'm not a spring chicken I want to make sure to stop doing things (ie:Caffiene, Tylenol PM, Wine, etc.) before I try to get pregnant to give myself a little more cushion on a healthy baby...I'm even going to make my husband quit smoking around me when we try and get pregnant...If you have any other helpful tips on health issues or preparations please feel free to post them.

Thanks you for your help, best wishes, Ready4aBaby

When my husband and I decided to try to get pregnant, I was told that it would take a few months to get the pill out of my system and while that was happening, to use another form of birth control.  We did not do that and it still took one year for us to get pregnant.  I had been on birth control for 7 years when we decided to try to get pregnant.  My daughter is now 5 years old and very healthy.  Don't forget the folic acid!  I wish you and your husband all the best.

My sister-in-law and I were both pregnant within two months of stopping birth control pills.  I'm not sure about her, but I was on them for 12 years.

When all else fails...ask your ob/gyn and see what they say. Good Luck!

I was also on bc for about 7 years and have been on minocycline for about one year.
I was told to stop taking both of them for at least 3 months before trying to conceive.  I was also advised it might take at least a year to become pregnant.
Since you are 35 or older, I would advise that if you are not pregnant after 6 months, to see your OB/GYN.  I have read this over and over on many sites, since age can play a factor in infertility and even 6 months can make a difference.
Also, since I've stopped taking minocycline (about a month ago), some acne has returned.  Don't get discouraged!  This is to have a cute little baby!
Best wishes!
