Immediate family has chickenpox!!

My sis and 2yr old niece have chickenpox!! My niece spent the night with us last week. We've been to eat at their house 3 times in the past 7 days. My niece and I have showered together 3 times in the past 7 days. My husband and I ate and drank behind her last night. I'm 17 weeks P w/ our first child. I had a bad case of chickenpox as a child so I'm trying not to worry and my OB isn't worried!! My husband nor his family know if he's ever had them!! My Sis also had them as a child but we can't remember if she had them bad or just a mild case. My niece has had one vacc. but not the second set so that's why they think she got them! My niece goes to the Dr. this afternoon. My Sis went this AM to the DR. If anyone has any thoughts! Or experience!

i'm glad this subject came up.  I had them as a child, can't remember too much but my husband has never had them either and i'm worried about him because I heard they can be deadly for adults too.  Just don't bring anybody who has them near your husband.  I think that's what i'm gonna have to do.  Does anybody know of an adult who had them and they were okay?

im not sure how great the vac is for chicken pox. when i was 12 or so i had chicken pox. very bad. i ended up in the intensive care with reyes syndrom (syndrome) from taking aspirin. so make sure if your family does come down with it only tylenol not aspirin or advil. to have them young and get it over with is great. your poor dh if he gets them now! when i had mine my sis got a few bumps then a week later developed a few more. weird but that is my family!

I would see if they could vaccinate your dh before he gets exposed.

It can be deadly in adults, but it isn't a guaranteed fatal thing. It will be most unpleasant for him should he get them at this point in his life.

The vac for chicken pox is about 85% effective and if you do get them anyway, the severity is supposed to be pretty mild. We did the vaccination as dh and I both had horrible cases of chicken pox and didn't want to risk the same fate for our boys : )

Over ten years ago I knew a guy how had them around the age of 20 and was hospitalized for several weeks and even was in a coma for a few days but he did survive and returned to normal health. That being over 10 years ago the treatment has probaly changed and is improved. My Sis is 26 and he gave her Valtrex to take and gave her no warnings about her health just for her and her daughter to stay away from everybody!! So she not overly concerned at the moment..

If you have had them, the baby will be fine. Where do you live that they do 2 doses of the vaccine? Both my boys only needed the 1 dose.

Hmm, I hope dh makes it through okay. Oftentimes people will have gotten them but will have no memory of them unless they were older children or had a really severe case. I was only 3 when I had it, but I still vaguely remember the itchiness!! I had a horrible case, in my eyes, throat, ears, etc.

ME TOO BAD CASE I was around 4 and I remember as well! My Sis's general Dr made a refernce to the fact that my niece at 2yr old had probaly only received one round of shots(hes not child primary). But again my niece will see her Dr this afternoon and they told her to come to back door of the office off the street so they're treating it serious!! We live in Metro ATL GA. I'm trying not to worry about me but what if my husband hasn't had them--I've heard chickenpox can be deadly for adults!

I have to say as an adult who has never had chicken pox myself, how mad it makes me when people don't think its a big deal to go around pregnant women while they are in the midst of their chicken pox outbreak. Chicken pox is still an infectious disease and can cause problems in many people. Sorry, I'm sure your sister is very responsible but I know that if I had chicken pox, I would not even attempt to go around a pregnant woman, just in the small chance that it COULD have an effect on her or the baby.
I would advise your DH to get the Vaccine though, I've heard it can be bad as an adult, although I don't think many people actually die anymore, its just that it can be very hard on an adult. I am pregnant right now, but am going to get the vaccine after I have my baby. Many people are actually immune to chicken pox, they can also do a simple test to find out if DH is immune too. Then there shouldn't be any worries.

Firstly stop panicking!
I had chicken pox as an adult and ived to tell the tale!!
It was fine, although the pox are more severe I was not hospitalised or anything, I felt the symptoms of high temerature and eneral un well being worse than an infant, my spots were more severe and were in my eye lips and other intimate places but no harm done!!
Shingles which is a secondry type of chicken pox can be more severs, the symptoms however are very different with just a few spots going around the torso and abdomen.
stop worrying and dont let the you can die responses scare you please
hugs

We are all old, lol. They never recommend aspirin for children or teenagers anymore. I remember when I was younger my folks always gave us aspirin for headaches and such. Now the only "baby aspirin" you find is actually marketed for heartattack prevention or those with specific fertility issues.

It is always good to remind people about the dangers of aspirin and children though, I don't think it was an unnecessary or bad thing ; )

im sorry i didnt post to scare anyone other than to remind people not to give children aspririn based products. it sounds like the other poster who talked about coma and such sounds like the same reyes syndrom (syndrome). no you cannot get this if you dont take aspirin. im sorry if i scared anyone i just want to make sure nobody has to go through that with their little on.
