Implantation spotting/bleeding

by mommy21boytryinfor#2, Mar 26, 2003 12:00AM
Hello, I am 33 and trying for my 2nd.  My cycles are normally 28 days, and this month I was 7 days late.  I took an HPT and it cam e back negative.  BUT I am having pg symptoms, and I've started bleeding (although very light-compared to my regular period).  I am still feeling the pg symptoms, and I have not had a 35 day (at the most 30 days) cycle in my whole life.  My son will be 1 in april, and this would be ok timing for us.  The test I took was during the day, would it be better to wait for the bleeding to stop...and test on say saturday ?  I'm trying to debate about calling my dr. but I don't want to waste his time when I don't know if I'm pg yet or not.  I have had NO cramping, except for the usual "abdominal twinges" (and I had them with my son). I have no regular PMS signs, although I know that some of the signs are the same.  My thinking is that my hcg levels were just too low, but with my 1st (and only other) pregnancy, I tested the day of my period was due, and got a definite positive.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, and I look forward to your advice.

You should go ahead and test your urine again.  Menstruation/bleeding has no effect on the results of a home pregnancy test.  If you are pregnant, the test should be positive within a few days of your missed period (there are always a few people who are the exception and don't test positive for a few weeks).  Dilute urine may result in a false negative result as well.  The best thing to do would be to go to your doctor and have a blood test done.  A negative serum B-hCG test definitively rules out pregnancy.  It is possible that the egg became fertilized but did not function after implantation and therefore you have some pregnancy symptoms but the B-hCG levels would not be high enough to be detected in your urine.  Also, it does not sound like implantation bleeding (this usually occurs 9-10 days after ovulation.  It could be a light period, with a pregnancy occuring as the bottom part of the uterus might slough off slightly around the time of your menstrual period.  Anyhow, the best way to know is to go see your doctor and have a serum (blood) pregnancy test.  (especially if your period was very light this time).
