Is it necessary to pump after each feeding

by shishka, Aug 04, 2008 05:49PM
I have been pumping and feeding my 3 weeks old son. He was having hard time latching on and I was worried that he is not having enough to eat. For the past three days he is eating from my breast. He seems to have enough since he sleeps for two or more hours after eating. I am also pumping after feedings, but not all the time. I pump 3-4 times a day. Is it necessary to pump? When do I stop pumping, just breastfeed?

Thank you

I always pumped off the excess milk for comfort and to help my supply.  I also had a freezer full of milk when I had to go back to work.  Plus my hubby could feed from time to time which helped me out if I wanted to run to the store or something.  I would say you can stop when you want.  Those are the reasons that I continued to pump though.

i have never heard of having to pump after feeding i still feed my 2 and 3 year olds they alway had plenty of milk and never once had a bottle so i dont think you need to pump to keep you supply up i only ever pumped a small amount each day to mix with their dinner when the were over 6 months they still have my milk every day
