Is my OB/GYN right? Two weeks after delivery...

Greetings everyone! I've been lurking on this forum for the last 4 months, but this is my first post...

I just delivered my first child two weeks ago today. For the past few days I've had chills and been running a temperature in the 103 F range. Also I've had headaches almost every day sense coming home. Tonight I had severe chills that had me shivering and chattering my teeth like crazy under a comforter and another blanket for close to 15min followed immediately by a temp of 103.6. I called the first night I ran a really high temp and was told by the doc on call to take some Ibuprofen, then I was just at my OB/GYN yesterday because I thought my episiotomy stitches had all come loose. (They had not, but they should warn a person not to look down there with a mirror after delivery... things DO NOT look the same!) I also wanted to complain at them about my fever, chills and headaches. My OB/GYN was a bit annoyed... He said yes the stitches were still in place, there was no sign of infection that he could tell, my chills, fever and headache were likely symptoms of lack of sleep and dehydration.

However, I've been drinking water like crazy, and even when I sleep pretty well for a couple of days it still happens. He said to just take Ibuprofen. This is my third day of Ibuprofen and I'm doing 100% breast milk, so this concerns me. Am I over-reacting? Is my OB/GYN right about everything or is he crazy? I'm on Medicaid for insurance, so he is not likely the best choice... Anyone else had this problem? Thanks!

It could be mastitis. When I had mastitis, it began with fever and severe chills. Does either one of your breasts hurt? Please go to the ER or GP ro get checked out because you may very well have an infection that requires antibiotics and immediate attention. Good luck and keep us posted.

Now - this is not normal at all.

It does sound like you have an infection,  maybe you didn't deliver all the placenta, or as others have said,  there could be something in the stitches area.

Your fever is WAY too high for an adult - get help now!

Please post back and say you are okay.

Forget your Dr. Just go to the ER. Medicaid has to cover that. As for the Ibuprofen and breastfeeding, it is really safe.

I agree, go to the ER, you could have an infection.
I know a woman who had something similar and it turned out that after delivering, the OB stiched her back up and forgot a piece of gauge inside of her and she was having an infection and the gauge was litteraly rotting inside of her.

I DO have one breast that is larger than the other even though I have swaped from side to side everytime I nurse from day one. Was one of yours larger when it happened?

Thank you all for your response. I will be heeding your advice and will let you know what happens...

I was really starting to think I was crazy after talking to the doc. I will be looking for a new one tomorrow!

I was going to ask if you are breast feeding as well.  Those sound like all the symptoms of mastitis or a clogged duct.  Is there any tenderness in one or both breasts in a specific area?  I have had four cases of it and it feels much like a really bad flu.

If you had a clogged duct that breast would fell very warm, check the one that you said is larger.
