Jenny McCarthey books: any good?

Jenny McCarthey books: any good?

Hi y'all... I'm thinking about buying the Jenny McCarthey book about preventing autism... anyone read it? Any opinions? I have a healthy 4 year old boy and a brand new baby boy and I'm curious about the different things that I can do to prevent autism for my baby (like vaccines and diet and stuff)... any truth to it?

thanks for your feedback!

Well, considering that there is absolutely no proof that autism is in any way connected to vaccines, I'd have to take her book at what it is:  her opinion, not based on fact.

Her pregnancy book is just a book of laughable pregnancy moments like having gas and wearing granny panties...It is crude at times BUT that is who Jenny is...It was good for laughs, I finished it in like 2 sittings because it was such an easy-light-hearted read.

There is no way to prevent autism and people have been receiving vaccinations for ages...autism is just the new buzz word diagnosis and getting more attention and press than before.  People who were deemed mentally retarded 20-40 years ago are now the same type of people who are being diagnosed as autistic...

A pediatrician would be best to discuss this with...

I have an autistic boy. I have read the book. I liked her previous two books but her book about autism is VERY one sided.
I don't think vaccines cause autism however I think the side effects of multiple vaccines can lower a child's immune system. Many children with Autism can have poorer immune system and gastric issues and multiple vaccines can lead to further immunity problems in some of these kids.
My son received multiple vaccines at age 3 (12 in one go to be exact) as I was told it was necessary where we lived. It all but destroyed his immune system and he took over a year to recover. During that time his development came to a halt as he was so sick all the time. BUT he was already showing signs of autism and he did not regress in any way during that period.
I did not hesitate to have my second son vaccinated, he was a typically developing child and I felt the risk of not vaccinating out weighed the risks of not vaccinating. I was careful to make sure they were spaced out and he did not receive more than one "live" vaccine at a time. He is fine.
I will continue to have my older son (the one with autism) vaccinated too but again will insist that he never receives more than one 'live" vaccine at any one time.
I also agree with the above comment too, you cannot prevent autism, it is no ones fault and there is no cure, treatment can help people cope and adapt to the condition.
Autism diagnosis is on the rise, in my opinion largely due to more education in this neurological disorder and better more easily available diagnostic techniques. That coupled with the fact that many milder cases that in the past would not have met the old diagnostic criteria now are. 10 years ago my son would have not me the diagnostic criteria I don't think. I for one am glad that kids like mine can now get the help they need.

Isabelle, I only pray that they find WHAT causes autism so that we can do everything possible to prevent it.  Unfortunately, there are THEORIES and none of them is proven yet.  I wish you all the best and I like mum2beagain's suggestion about spacing out the vaccines :)
