Karo syrup for Newborn

I have a 2 week old baby boy and he is on Similac advance.  First week was fine and the second week his stool has became hard and clay like.  Doctor said to give him Karo syrup.  I did that with my first son but he was several months old at the time, now 3 yrs od and is a healthy kid.  Im just being a little skeptical about giving a newborn karo syrup in the formula.  Doctor assured me that its ok and will not bring on any stomach issues once hes older.   I know some may say switch formula, but the doctor said to try this first and if does not help then switch.
Any advise for me.
thank you

I've come to realize that this Karo syrup method is very common but I posted a question regarding the use of Karo syrup and some mommies have said to me that it is not safe. The babies doctor also told me to use it on my 3 wk old twins and when I started reading all of the things that can happen I stopped using it. I guess everyone is different. I'm really loss and confused.......

I had the same problem.  I changed his formula to Low iron for two weeks and then back to the Similac Advance (because the iron is important for his brain development).   I talked to my Dr. about the constipation and he suggested 1 oz of prune juice mixed with 1 oz water.   I did that and it worked really well.   Now that my son is regular again and not in pain with passing BM, I add 1/2 oz prune juice with every 6 oz of formula.   It has really helped him. It diluted enough to not cause stomach pain, but its presence helps with the BM.
Dr. says it perfectly fine for him to help with BM.
PS- my son is 5 weeks old and we started this when he was 3 1/2 weeks.

My mom did it with me and my brother and I have done it with my 3 kids...at all ages...newborn to almost a year.  If you are skepitical about your baby being so young, only do half the normal amount as Kris123 mentioned

Just another bit of info from another source-- My Dr. said NOT to give a baby the Karo. But you know, all Dr's are different. Do what feels right to you. We usually know what feels right.
