Kidney infection at 11 weeks...

by tinad, Feb 13, 2007 12:00AM
I received a call from my doctors office at 5:30pm last night. They told me that they found bacteria in the urine sample I gave last week at the lab. She stated that my levels were so high that they suspect a kidney infection occurred within 24 hours of giving the sample (I gave the sample on Wed of last week). They called an antibiotic into my pharmacy and asked me to pick it up right away because they wanted me to start taking the medicine immediately. I asked if the infection could cause harm to my baby and she said that the doctor will talk to me more on Wednesday at my ob appt. I had no clue that I have an infection. I've had an UTI before and I remember feeling like I had to 'go' all the time and it hurt when I urinated. I did't get that at all this time. I've been having back pain for about a week now but I just chalked it up to the pregnancy.

Please...does anyone know if a kidney infection can hurt an unborn baby? I will get answers from the doctor tomorrow but it's so hard to wait... Thanks for your help.

i realized I had UTI at about 6 weeks

then they tested and realized it was a kidney infection - they told me all along only if the levels of toxins for soome reason gets out of hand is it dangerous to baby

BUt be prepared - i am 23 weeks today - and my kidney infection is still there - they just uppedmy antibiotics again

try to avoid eating any simple sugars at all - they really cuts down on the bacteria (if you can d mostly cheese and meat - then very little whoe grains)  it will clear up faster

best of luck

did they culture the sample they took? i recently tested positive for bacteria after 2 urine samples but, having no symptoms, had them do a culture and it didnt grow anything - so not an infection, just normal flora (or so my OB said.) i'd get all the info you can... lots of people here say macrobid is safe but i have read a few things that said otherwise. good luck-

mgi - Thanks for the advise. I hope you feel better soon! Did you get any side effects from the kidney infection? Every symptom I've had I've just attributed to the pregnancy.

twiceadopt - Yes, they had me give the urine sample at the lab and they ran a culture on the sample. Apparantly the bacterial levels in my urine are really high which is why they put me on the antibiotics right away. The nurse sounded concerned but wouldn't really answer my questions before the doctor looks at me tomorrow. They must not be overly concerned if they didn't ask me to come in right away... It's just hard to wait on answers because I lost a baby (m/c at approx 5 or 6 weeks) last year and it took me 11 months to conceive again.

the biggest effects were not being able to eat any sugar - if I did I was (am)  in overwhelming pain

then the antibiotics made me really sick too

from 6ish weeks till maybe 10 weeks I was just miserable from it all

now I am in pain if I eat the wrong foods but I really learned how to manage it
