Large Ovarian Cyst

by dsa0417, Apr 29, 2007 12:00AM
I hope someone can help with advice. I am 48yrs old and was diagnosed last week with a 7cm septated right ovarian cyst and 6cm endometrial thickness in uterus (maximum allowed is 4). I went to the doctor due to 53 days between periods and pain in lower right ovary area plus bleeding starting 4 days after period ended and continues today. Dr ordered CA-125 after ultrasound results - don't know that answer yet. Dr is performing an endometrial biopsy to check for abnormal cells and wants to monitor the cyst for 2-3 cycles and if it hasn't diminished in size refer me to a gyno for further evaluation.

Questions: Is it wise given my age to wait and monitor or should I see a gyno now? Could the missed period be that perhaps the right ovary isn't working due to cyst?

I had a very large ovarian tumor (cyst) which ended up being 20cm during this pregnancy.  I had to have surgery to remove it.  In all truthfullness, my doctors sent me to an Onocologist, and had him examine me as he was the expert in tumors.     I would suggest seeing a Gynocologist as soon as you can, and talk to them about the treatments.  This is more of their "expert" field.

Also, as for your lack of periods.  Yes, cysts can and will cause lack of periods and cycles.  I didn't have one for 18 months.

I too have a 20 cm cyst and am 38 weeks pregnant. I have had my cyst monitored constantly throughout the pregnancy and have had itdrained a few times. I am due to be getting my cyst removed 2 months after the birth and am now starting to worry about the effect the cyst may have had on my ovary due to the length of time it has been there. I also had the CA125 test which came back slightly raised but not at a level to worry about. This I was told would be able to establish if the growth was cancerous or not, I also had the contents of the cyst analysised after the drainage which came back as negative. However I know how worrying having a large cyst can be especially if they do not seem to diminish so a second opinion would be of benefit to your emotional and physical health. By the way prior to getting pregnant my periods were very eratic sometimes I would wait two months without one and other times 4-6 weeks so it does make a mess of your cycle. Only looking back do I know realise how long I may have had the cyst there for. Anyway good luck and I hope everything goes well for you.

They had to take my ovary and the tumor/cyst, because it was inside the ovary itself.  I'm sure that once I have this baby I will probably go through a mourning period of not "being whole" at 32... and I desperately want to try for one more baby after this one.
