Low HCG and its effects

by acour18, Oct 11, 2004 12:00AM
My wife is 6 weeks pregnant.  She had her blood tested last week and her HCG was about 500.  Two days later it was tested again and her HCG did not double but only rose to 600 or so.  We fear either ectopic pregnancy or that she will undoubtably misscariage.  Yet she will have her level checked again this week.  If by some chance her level spikes, what effect will a low HCG level in the 5th and 6th week have on the development of the fetus?  Will problems result with respect to fetal development?  Will she likely miscarriage?

I'm sorry things aren't looking good and again everyone is different but all three times that my Hcg levels were barely rising I ended up miscarring. In most cases it's probably for the best because there is something genitcally wrong with the fetus but in some cases such as mine I didn't produce enough progesterone one of the hormones that make up your HCG levels. Which meant I wasn't nourshing the fetus and they wouldn't make it past 6weeks. With my fourth pregnancy they started me on injections of the hormone to help support my pregnancy and it worked- I had a little girl and this time around we started the injections again and I am 25 weeks pregnant with a boy. If the HCg levels were to all of a sudden to really double they can do an ultra sound to make sure everying is okay...so try not to worry and I will hope for the best with you both but I thought I'd share my story if you do miscarry don't get discouraged there is always hope.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.  My doctor told me they are concerned if the numbers don't raise at least 50%.  However there are sooo many miracle stories out there.  Many women think they are going to miscarry due to the numbers and end up with healthy babies.  These numbers are somewhat of a curse.  Try and be patient and know that a miscarriage is almost always the key that opens the door to a later successful pregnancy.

Good luck and keep us posted!  momttc
