Low Lying Placenta...Rock Rose??? Nurses? Others who've had this.

by deanne11, May 09, 2007 12:00AM
Rock Rose - I believe I read somewhere you are a nurse or maybe you just have a lot of 'real' medical facts.

I was told at a 16 week u/s by the dr I have a low lying placenta, but it should move and not cause a problem.  Then he must have noticed the fear on my face and he  said 'Let me say this again....it will move'.

I proceeded to ask what happens if it doesn't.  He said if it doesn't it is considered placenta previa and a c-section is necessary.  Then repeated...it will move.

Can the drs pretty much tell when it is worrisome and when it isn't?  I just don't want them sweeping this under the rug.

I've had no bleeding and he said my cervix looked great (it was being measured due to a LEEP I had) he also said it was 50cm?  He said most women are between 25-50 and I'm at the high end so no worries there....cervix is tightly closed.

He said they'll do my 20 week u/s and check the placenta again but was 100% sure it will move in the next 4 weeks....

I just need some reassurance that these drs know what they are talking about....lol.  I've had 3 m/c and now at 17weeks....hoping to go all the way to term

Mine moved out of the way:)

And even if it doesn't, they will monitor you very closely and do a section if they have any concerns.

I agree with the doc....

It will move.

I didn't have it, but I had a little bit of light spotting at 14 and 18 weeks.  They did an ultrasound to check for it and explained that a lot of times the placenta is low early on and in most cases as your uterus grow up (usually around 20 weeks) the placenta moves up as well.

I am sure yours will, in most cases it does.

Good luck, I am glad to hear you are already at 16 weeks!

I had a friend who was also told this but as he indicated it almost always moves up with growth of the uterus...hers did and there was no problem...I remember her worrying about it so we researched the topic and found that it usually moves but if not bed rest and c section would be the protocol. Try not to worry...I know...easy to say hard to do.....

Thanks ladies....I just needed to hear other's stories.  I've been to hell and back the past year and just need some positive to happen here..
I'm just the type of person that if something will go wrong...it's going to go wrong with me.....

God's special way of testing me and showing that HE loves me I guess....

Keeps me strong.

I just read horror stories about placenta previa causing death of both mother and fetus....but I guess that is when it goes undetected.

I had a low lying placenta with my first DD, and it did move up by 20 weeks. I really wouldn't worry. I don't think your doctor would tell you that flat out if he didn't really believe it would.
I'm so happy for you and glad you are already 16 weeks!!

Deanna - I agree with everyone else.  The chances are VERY good (I think 95%?) that your placenta will move up.  Especially if it's not currently over your cervix now,  you really have nothing to worry about.

I know it's hard not to worry,  but this one sounds fine.  Best wishes.

Same thing with me. I was told at 15wks that I had a low lying placenta, but they said not to even worry about it yet cause more than likely it will move on its own. I go back for another doctors apt today and a extensive u/s in 2wks. So we should know by then I hope things are better. Good luck and try not to worry too much.

I can't remember the exact statistics but it was above 90% that a low lying placenta would correct itself.  I was one of the few that didn't correct itself and became placenta previa.  Try not to worry and have your Dr monitor it closely.  You can still have a healthy baby.
Best of luck to you and your little one!

How did you make out with placenta previa....mother and baby did okay?  I pray?

by AndiJ78, May 09, 2007 12:00AM
I have had a low lying placenta with all three of my babies at the 20 week mark and with all three it moved. If, by  chance, yours doesn't, you will be monitored very closely throughout your pregnancy and delivery will happen via c-section if it is still over the cervix at the end.

Try not to fret, your doc has seen this a million times ; )

i am only 14 weeks and have placenta previa. the placenta of baby a is touching the edge of my cervix. i am on light activity, no squatting, no lifting anything heavier than a tissue box and pelvic rest. if i bleed again i will have to go on strict bedrest until it either resolves or i have a c-section.

my doctor said he could almost guaranty me that at my 20 week ultrasound it would be moved up with the rest of everything.

good luck DeAnn

I am 20w4d today. I was told yesterday at my u/s that I have a low lying placenta and that I would have a bloodier show than normal. Dr. was not concerned at all and never mentioned anything about c-section or it moving on its own. I am being seen every 2 -3 weeks due to history of m/c, it makes Doc and me feel much better about the progress of this pregnancy.

Your uterus still has a lot of growing to do. It will move up as the uterus expands. The dr will do a follow up us later to be sure. Best wishes to you.

I gave birth via c-section 3 wks early.  My son is healthy and 7 yrs old now.   I had very serious complications due to placenta previa but had a wonderful, cautious Dr.  who monitored me weekly from 5 months on.
I know it's hard but try to stay positive and I hope at  your next us everything will be ok.

by lovethebops, May 09, 2007 12:00AM
I had that at 18 weeks w/ my daughter. I went back at 7 months to have another U/S to make sure it had moved. It moved and I had a completely normal vaginal delivery. I'm sure it will be the same for you. Good luck and I hope all goes well for you and baby!
