Low milk supply

My daughter will be 4 weeks old tomorrow.  I haven't had an adequate milk supply since she was born.  I tried waiting it out and nursing frequently and pumping to try to increase supply.  It didn't work.  She was 7lb 8oz at birth and 6lb 15oz at her drs appt Friday.  He insisted that we start supplememnting formua in order to get her to put on weight.  So he told me to nurse from one side, then offer a bottle.  I have been doing this, and then pumping.  When I pump I only get about 3/4 oz at most (this is from both breasts combined).  I am getting reallly frustrated.  I really wanted to breast feed since I know that this is best for baby, but it seems that I may not be able to.  Does anyone have any suggestions.  I am using the Medela pump in style double electric breast pump.  Please help!!

there are ways to help increase your milk.  you can take some herbal supplements like fenugreek along with mothers milk thistle.  there also is another specific to breastmilk production maybe its called mothers tea?  have you worked with a lactation consultant?  maybe she isnt latching on correctly.  you need to try to be as relaxed as possible too, maybe try taking a hot shower to help with milk let down first.  get in a comfy chair, look at a picture of your girl if she isnt around when you pump.  dont give up just yet!

Are you losing weight really fast?  Are you getting enough fluids and calories?  I only survived nursing my son for a year because I called my local La Leche League rep about every other week with problems.  They know sooooo much and they can help you.  Go to llli.org and click on breastfeeding help and find local LLL help and follow the links to you state and city.  There should be a phone number to call and talk to someone.  I even had to have one of the leaders come to my house because I was having so much trouble.  The help is free and awesome!
