Low progesterone

by hankavrbka, Sep 25, 2008 11:29AM
Can low progesterone level cause any harm to a baby? I had level 8 in week 8. The doctor started me on Prometrium and it seems to help, now at week 9 my level was 29 :-) Sooo relieved. But could the low level of progesterone do anything bad to the fetus within those first 8 weeks?

Hi! I don't know anything about the harm to the baby, but I have started on 400 mg of prometrium, my level was a 6.6. I still don't know if I am having a m/c or just low progesterone. We won't go back to the dr. until next week. I would like to know any info you have--what your dr. said about the 25, how much were you taking, did you spot? Did you have any cramping? Thanks! I would love to have someone to talk to about this!!

Hello Jessianne, I know how difficult this week will be for you. I just went through it last week. I was sooooooo scared like never in my life. I had three pregnancies before this one, the first one (thank God!!!) was successful and I have a beautiful healthy son. Then I had two misscarriages (first one at 6 weeks last November and second one at 11 weeks in June - it was missed abortion, the baby stopped growing at 9 weeks). So this time I am very scared and the doctor was concerned too. He did the progesterone test the first day I came there (which was late, I was 8 weeks, I had no idea I was pregnant before :-)) and it was very low (it could have caused the miscarriages before, nobody will ever know). He started me on Prometrium right away, I took 100mg twice a day. The week until the next check-up was soooo scary. I had some cramps, but no bleeding or spotting. I absolutely didn't know what to expect. When I went to the doctor and they did the ultrasound, I didn't even want to look (I still can see the previous baby, its arms and legs and no heartbeat). When they told me there is a heart beat this time I started crying. The blood came out ok, but I am not sure, if everything is won by this. I am still very scared and every single cramp and pain freaks me out. I have to keep taking the same amount of Prometrium until week 12. I hope everything will be ok with this pregnancy as well as your pregnancy. I wish you all the luck and hope, next week you will find the same good news as me. Please let me know.
