Low progestrone before pregnacy and low prog. during miscarriage?

by momof2princesses, Aug 08, 2003 12:00AM
Hi I am new to this site, I just had a miscarriage on Monday and I am so sad it's unreal. I do have two other children so that helps a little but It still hurts. I am just wondering if anyone has had the same problem as me and what they did about it. We had been trying to get pregnant for 5 months and nothing so finally I went to the doctor and she did blood work on day 21 and it came back my prog. was low at 1.1 so she gave me clomid, but I didn't get the chance to use it because I came up pregnant last month, I was so excited and she didn't seem worried. So then I started bleeding and I knew something was wrong, and I was in fact having a miscarriage. So drew more blood to check my levels and my prog. was still only 1.1 and my Hcg was 83. So now I am thinking about next time and if I should just go ahead and take the clomid to see if it help my prog. level? Does anyone have any idea about this? Or any advice? How else do you raise you prog. levels and arent' they suppose to be around 15 when you get pregnant? I am so scared this will happen again, so I want all the information I can get to take to my doctor and say I want to do this or this, because I can't handle this happening again. If anyone has anything on this please help, THanks!K

I miscarried for the second time at the end of April.  The doctor ran some tests on me and found my progesterone level to be 4.1.  I began temp. charts and progesterone suppositories last month.  My progesterone level was checked last week and showed 10.6.  I found out on Tuesday that I am pregnant so they increased my suppositories to twice a day and my level yesterday was 18.5.  I was very worried about the test results and also I am now worried because my HCG is apparently in the low range.  The progesterone suppositores aren't the most fun but they work!  I would definitely ask your doctor about them.  I was also told that ten means you are good to go but they would like the count higher.  My doctor said that five means you ovulated.  So, clomid was actually a possibility for me too.  If I understand correctly, clomid also assists in raising progesterone or helping it somehow.

Thanks for responding IW, I hope everything works out for you, I will be thinking of you. I don't know how you've gotten through two m/c, It has been the hardest thing I have ever been through. The sadness is just incredible. Anyways, How long did you wait before you started trying again? And were you on the prog. suppositories when you go pregnant this time? How far along are you? My dr. wants me to wait a couple of cycles before trying again, but I am just wanting to RIGHT now.  With your previous losses, was your prog. very low before and after? I wish you the best of luck! I have an 8 yr old daughter and started trying to conceive again in '01.  I had a miscarriage in Jan of '02 (blighted ovum). I got pregnant again in April and at 5wks, my progesterone level was only at 3.  My father (a reproductive endocrinologist) immediately put me on progesterone suppositories (50mg) twice a day.  I was having an u/s every week and the heartbeat was strong.  At 10wks, all still looked good and my progesterone was up to 13 but my father still felt it was too low.  I stayed on the suppositories then at my 13 wk appt. u/s showed the baby had died.  It's so hard not knowing if it was the low progesterone or chromosomal abnormalities that caused the miscarriage.  I had a period 33 days after my D&C and I will get my progesterone level tested on day 21 so that I can get started on progesterone early if it is too low.  It's really difficult going through 2 miscarriages after already having a child.  My first pregnancy was such a breeze!  I know the stress you and many others feel, but ultimately it's mostly out of our hands.  Anyway, we start trying again on Saturday.  I wish the best for myself and everyone out there trying to conceive.

I don't know how I have gotten through two either but it is thinking about possibly going through 3 that drives me crazy.  I had two cycles after my last miscarriage before becoming pregnant.  During my second cycle is when they checked my progesterone level and started me on the suppositories.  I started them July 20th and found out on August 5th that I am pregnant.  I just started my fifth week on Saturday and with every tingle or uncomfortable feeling, I am scared. This was the first time that my progesterone levels had ever been checked.  Hopefully this was the problem and it won't happen again!  Good luck to both of you!

Hello. I have went through 5 miscarriges. It was really hard for me. All the doctors that I went to told me that it was because I was young. My first micarrige I was 17 and they keeped happening all the way to when i was 21. After my last one when i was 21 I finally found a doctor that did something. She told me that my progestrone level was low. So what she told me to do is when I think I'm pregent hurry and go to her so she could give me some proges. supositories. Im 22 now and I found out I was pregent on Aug 18. So I ran to her and she put me on 100mg 2 a day for 2 months. I really hope that it will work. Well I wish everyone all the luck. And if anyone could pray for me I thank u for it.

Hi.  I'm 24, I have 1 child, a boy, who's 4.  I had problems during my pregnancy with him.  in all 3 trimesters.  Spotting, Low blood presure, Loss of weight, at 8 mths I weighed 135, 10 pounds heavier then i was when I got pregnant.  I made it full term with him, and he's as healthy as a horse!
I got married in June of 01.  We've been trying to have a baby for about 1 1/2 years now.  I was on the depo needle, which i know can take about 6 mths - 1 year to get out of your system.
I finally got pregnant in March, only to loose the baby at 7 weeks.  I was really depressed.  Couldn't sleep, or eat.  Got myself together and found out I was pregnant again in July, and lost again at 7 weeks.  I was heart broked and didn't know if i wanted to try again.  It's like everytime i lost, i lost a piece of me that i couldn't get back, and I didn't know if i could get through another one.  Well, Here i am again, pregnant, only my doctor has put me on Progestrone supposit.  I don't really know what they can do.  I mean, what happens if there's too much progestrone?  What are the side effects?  Can it harm my baby if there are too many hormons going through my body???  I know progestrone is normal in a pregnancy, but what about too much, can it incress the risk of defects, diab., aneima, etc.?
I'm told to stay relaxed, take it easy, don't stress... but i'm worried about not making it the 12 weeks, and loosing yet another one, and i'm worried that taking the progestrone and having too much in my system can do dammage!  Does anyone have any info they can share with me, because I don't think i can deal with loosing another one, and explaining to my son why there wont be any baby...again.

Hi, I like many of you, have had trouble getting preg, or have have a m/c.  My first born, a boy, was a big surprise.  I had gone since June of 98 with no period.  I did a home test twice a mth, beginning and end, all of which came back negative.  I finally went to my doctor who sent me in for tests at the hospital which also came back neg.  A week later i had an ultrasound expecting to find a cyst or tumour and was faced with the possibility that i would never be able to have children.  Well it was a baby they found.  Which at 19 i was shocked but happy because i always wanted kids.  He was born July of 99.  They still don't know why i had no period.
I got married in June of 02.  We've been trying for about 1 1/2 years to have another one.  I was on the depo needle, which i know takes about 6mths to 1yr to completly leave your system, so we patiently waited.  In Mar. i took a home preg test which came back with a faint pos. in fact 5 did.  But the hospital one's were still coming back neg.  At about 7 weeks I lost the baby.  About 2 mths later I got preg again.  Still faint home tests, this time 3, and neg hospital tests, which i found out you have to be a certain level before they will say yes.  They want to give a false neg, then a false pos.  I lost that one at about 6-7 weeks again.  My son is 4 now, and is anxiously waiting for a brother or sister.  They figured it was my progestrone level that was causeing the problem, so I'm on supplements now.  I found out on the 27th of this mth that i'm preg, this time 2 very pos. home tests and 1 pos hospital test, first for everything.  I started takeing progestrone supp. but I don't know a whole lot about them.  All i know is that if it will keep my baby there, i will take them.  But now i want more info on them, the side affects, what to expect, anything at all.
I am sorry to all of you who have lost, and wanted so bad.  I have been there twice, and I still feel a loss.  Especially when my son asked where the baby was.  But with any luck now there will be one at the end of 12 weeks.
Please if you have any info on progestrone supp. please email me at angelicdevil_22***@****
Good luck to all of you

I HAD A MISCARRIAGE ON MY ANNIVERSARY 8/8. MY DOCTOR SAID IT WAS LOW PROGESTRONE AND IT CAN BE REMEDIED BY TAKING A PROGESTRONE SUPPLIMENT FROM THE 14TH DAY (OR SO) AFTER CLOMID UNTIL THE 10TH WEEK OF PREGNANCY.This sounds right to me and I was wondering if anyone has had this experience.

I too am new at this site and over a month ago I lost my baby.  My husband and I have been trying for over eight years to concive and in May of 2003 I did.  Every month seemed to be going great until late July I miscarried.  I still am emotional about it but I was told about a book called You Can Heal Your Life by Louise L Hay plus another book called What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Prememopause. I really suggest reading these books they both talk about the emotional baggage we carry and what we can do about it. One book speaks of the hormones and how they play a large part in our system. I too am taking progestrone but I am taking the natural progestrone cream not the synthitic. I am trying to get pregnant again but I have uterine fibroids and my Doctor suggests surgery to remove them but there are some major risks in doing this.  So I am taking matters into my own hands and I am trying the natural way to heal.  So far I have been on herbs that helps the female reproduction heal plus herbs that detoxifies you body on top of as well taking the progestrone cream (natural) and so far I really have noticed a difference. My husband has noticed the same thing.  My lower abs were always swollen and stuck out and that is from the fibroids, but after being on the herbs and cream the swelling has gone down tremendously.  I am also eating better and letting go of alot of emotional baggage I've carried around for 30 years and drinking Red Rasberry tea this is great for strengthing the uterus. I hope anyone reading this will see that there are other alternatives instead of surgery. THANKS FOR LISTENING.

Hello,
I am new to this site and I am a 29 yo who miscarried twins in Aug 02 and have been trying to become pregnant every since.  This was my first pregnacy and i was taking clomid 50mg when i became preg. on my 1st try days 5-9. Now for some reasons i am having a hard time.  I just got my pregest. lvl results today and it was 1.9. The nurse told me that was normal.  But I read in here that it should be somewhere around 15 to become preg. If anyone could please give my husband and myself any info. it would be greatly appreciated. I was also told i had PCOS and that was why i was started on pregest. for 3mos. to regulate me then clomid on the 4th mon. without progest.  My heart is empty and i know having a child will never replace my daughter and son that i lost at 4 1/2 mos. but our hearts and arms or still longing to hold our child. Those were the 1st children for the both of us. please give us any info you may have even info on helping us coop with our lost while still trying to conceive.

Hi i am  trying to conceive for the second time and I just was on clomid this month at 200mg and metformin at 1500mg. The last three months my day 21 blood test showed my level at 1.   My day 21 blood test this month  my progestrone level  came back at an 8 and the nurse said that ovualtion is very unlikely at this level.  Is there any way that I have actually ovulated this month?? I have a difficult time believing I didn't ovualte since I had all the symptoms.  Is it possible that I did in fact ovulate or I guess what I am asking is what do your levels have to be to indicate ovulation

I'm not sure your question will get seen on this thread, since it is older.  You might post it again as a question on its own thread if you don't get any answers.  Good luck!

Hi, my husband and I are trying to conceive our first child. I am now on my third cycle with the clomid 50 mg. My progestrone levels were checked the other day and it was only at 1.86. But I feel as if I might be pregnant. Should I worry? I do not want to miscarry.
