MTHFR - Folate Deficiency

I am currently 8w2d along.  My cousin has had 3 back to back miscarriages.  Her doctor found out she has the MTHFR gene - where her body does not absorb the folic acid.  She was told this was hereditary.  Our moms are sisters, but obviously we have different dads.  If this is untreated, it could also cause heart problems early in life.  And her dad (my uncle) has had earlier cardiac problems.

My understanding of this mutation is that my cousin would have gotten mutated genes from both her mom and her dad.  I talked to my nurse about this and asked if this is something I should be tested for and she said no because I'm already pregnant, my blood work was normal, and the fact that we're cousins, not sisters, means it's probably low that I will have this also.

Has anyone else ever had this?  If so, did it run in your family?  If so, how? (i.e., sisters, cousins, etc.)

Thanks!

I have a blood clotting disorder that is hereditary.  From my mother.  It is factor II prothombin mutation.

It's 50/50 even with siblings.  Neither my brother nor sister have it...so I was the lucky one.

I'm sure you will be fine.  When will you get the results?

I hve homo MTHFR and have delivered three healthy girls, 2 pre dx and one after a late mc last year.  I have one copy from my father and one from my mother.  All my sisters have had healthy pregnancies, one has 4 children and the other had 3 with no problems.  My mom had 5 children and lost one at 16 weeks like myself.  As my dr. said, MTHFR is one of the most common clotting disorders 11% of the population has the kind I do, and one of the least serious.  I would not worry about it, I am sure you will be fine.  They only found out about it for me when they were looking for the reason that I mc late.  They were never able to tell if I lost the baby because of MTHFR or not.  However, I did take BA from preconception until I delivered at 38 weeks on my Dr.'s recommendation.
