MTHFR genetic counseling

MTHFR genetic counseling

I just found out Friday that I have the homozygost MTHFR mutuation and the fertility endocrynologist I'm seeing (since my 2nd m/c in 6 mos) told me to go to a genetic counselor. I'm worried about that since I don't seem to see anyone with this mutation commenting on genetic counseling. I know there is an increased risk of neural tube defects with folate issues, but no clue how high the risk is. I also found out I'm a carrier of CF gene - dh being tested now too - so don't know if counseling is due to both or just to MTHFR or just the dr cya.  I go tomorrow for blood work to test my homocysteine levels - start on Folgard tomorrow too.  Not sure what this all means for me or potential of being able to carry a baby, so far can't get past 6 weeks. Anyone else sent for genetic counseling?

I was sent for genetic counseling after being diagnosed with homo, double MTHFR. This means that both of my parents carried the gene defect. I have had two diagnosed miscarriages since April. The genetic counselor that I visited had very little information on the mutation and what she did provide differed from most of the information I find on the web or from by Ob-Gyn. That is not to discourage you from going and meeting with the counselor, they might provide you with tons of information, mine simply wanted to focus on DH family and their genetic history. I do know that with MTHFR, getting pregnant and staying pregnant is not difficult as long as you are on extra folate, B6, B12 and Heparin once you get pregnant. Good luck and I will post any further information I come across!

thanks for the response - I was hoping that to be the case - seems maybe more likely a cya thing to me.  From what I read online increased risk of NTD is like 2-3x more likely, but overall risk is low to start with.  I think at this point I'm more concerned with results of DH CF test than with the possibility of NTD.  Well, that and actually being allowed to ttc again after being on folgard for a few months so I can have my baby!!
