Medication while Pregnant

Hello,
I am now 23 weeks pregnant and Like I said before I have high blood pressure.  The doctor gave me some medication he said to control my blood pressure.  However,  I am scare taking it. From what I heard a pregnant women is not suppost to take no medication at all.  The medication is call Methyldopa and I am suppose to take it 4x a day, I think that is a lot.  Has anyone taken this medication before?  Or does anyone have an advise for me, what do you think? Please help!

Talk to your doctor some more and tell him your concerns. You may also want to call the pharmacist that filled your prescription, they usually are very imformative. Good luck. I also wanted to mention that there are some foods that help bring down high blood pressure, you should check that out. Search the web-see a diatician maybe. Good luck.

Methyldopa is probably the most commonly prescribed antihypertensive for pregnant women.  It has been used for a very long time in pregnancy, so there is good information on its safety and effectiveness.

The danger with hypertension is with NOT controlling it well enough.  Uncontrolled high blood pressure can be very damaging to you and your baby.  

Methyldopa is not very long acting, that is why you have to take it generally 3 or 4 times a day, as opposed to some medications non pregnant women can use that last longer and only have to be taken once a day.  

Your BP should be checked either by the doctor or at home regularly.  If you are taking too much, your BP may get low and you may experience dizziness.
