Minocycline - how long after taking this drug before it is safe to conceive a child?

by dougiedogood, Apr 11, 2007 12:00AM
Hello folks,

Hopefully someone can kindly find an answer for me.

My sister has been on 25mg Minocycline for a few months in order to treat an infection. Now she wants to have a child (1st). But she is deeply concerned about the possible side-effects of any residual Minocycline in her body.

She had consulted with several doctors and the answers varied from "no need to worry, you may try to conceive immediately after you finish with this drug" to "wait six months."  I have searched Google for medical citations and have come up with nothing in regards to any related to a waiting period.

Can anyone point to anything that discusses a waiting period OR not?

Thank you so much!

i found this

Minocycline should not be taken by persons allergic or otherwise sensitive to tetracycline antibiotics. Minocycline is not given to children (particularly under the age of ten) because minocycline may cause irreversible staining of the teeth as they develop. Also, minocycline can cause damage to an unborn fetus and should not be used by individuals who might get pregnant. There are not clear-cut guidelines, but persons trying to have a family should probably be off minocycline for at least a week or two before trying to become pregnant. Using tetracycline antibiotics (including minocycline) while taking birth control pills, may make the birth control pills less effective in preventing pregnancy. Women who are breast feeding should not take minocycline. Long term studies investigating the risk of decreased fertility in humans have not been conducted.
