Miscarriage related with levels

by TJMF, Jun 14, 2004 12:00AM
I just had a miscarriage at little over 9 weeks.  I was on progesterone and doing fine until they took me off it right before 9 weeks.  I started spotting red again and then miscarried.  Another doctor told me I should have been on it my whole first trimester.  Did I lose the baby because of this. Next time how soon should I be put on progesterone. Thank you you for your time.

I hate to say this but yes taking you off of the progesterone could have caused you to miscarry but we will never know for sure. Some people such as I do not produce enough progesterone on our own so we need these during our first 11-12 weeks of pregancy. At 12 weeks the placenta takes over producing it so you usually don't need the shots after that point. The progesterone helps support your pregnancy as long as it is a viable one...for example they won't just put you on progesterone without making sure your pregnancy looked viable at the beginning by either u/s or HCG levels through a blood test. They start me on the progesterone shots as soon as I have a positive pregancy test. I take a home test and then go in and have blood drawn and then as long as the HCG levels are where they are suppose to be they start the shots. Now before they put you on progesterone did they check to make sure your pregnancy was a viable one? If they didn't maybe there were problems at the beginning and the progestrone just prolonged the inevitable. I hope this makes sense...The way the doctor told me for example if I had an empty sac and the doctor never checked and started the progestrone shots I may not miscarry as soon on my own as I would have without the shots because the progesterone is helping my body hold onto the sac..... Why did he stop the progesterone at only 9 weeks????

From what my specialist says, you should be on it for the first 14 weeks.  Good luck.

The role of exogenous progesterone supplementation during pregnancy is not a clear cut one.  There is lots of controversy over its efficacy.
