Mothers: Trust Your Intuition

Mothers: Trust Your Intuition

I wanted to share a brief version of my story to encourage mothers out there to not make the same mistakes that I did.  For 2 years my pediatrician told me that my son's severe constipation was normal.  My son would not go for 1 - 2 weeks, and near the end of that 2 years it was getting up near 3 weeks.  Before he would go he would spike a low grade fever and stop eating, and have tummy trouble.  His stool was never formed or hard.  I always felt in my gut that something wasn't right, but he was a doctor and I was a paranoid mom (my son was born with other problems) so I pushed it aside.

Finally at his 2 year checkup when my son had not grown that year more than an inch, I probed further and he told me chronic constipation was something he'd look into if a child hadn't grown much, and mine hadn't, but he did nothing still.  I switched doctors and got a referral to a specialist.  Within 2 months after testing we found out that my son had a disease called Hirschsprung disease.  It is rare (and my son is actually only the 2nd documented case where it presented with gastroschisis) and because of the delayed diagnosis, my son had to have additional surgeries and a colostomy bag.

The point of my story is that God blessed you with a gift of intuition for a reason, and you should trust it.  Doctors are humans and make mistakes, and some of them (like mine) are just plain lazy and have forgotten why they became a doctor in the first place.

For anyone who ever commented on my questions about his issues, I thank you - and now I finally have an answer.

Thanks for sharing your story to help others!   I don't know anything about Hirschsprung disease.   I hope he is doing well.

I too hope your son is doing well.  You are so right about following our intuition.  This reminds me of my favorite joke...

What do you call a Dr. that barely passed Med School.....A Dr.

Glad you have your answers and your son is on the mend.  Thanks for the reminder!
