Muscle Spasms

by alaysha, Aug 06, 2007 01:45PM
I'm 19 weeks and woke up to the most horrible thing this morning. It seems when I stretched my leg out that the muscle tensed up and then wouldn't release. It hurt so bad but ended up abating a couple of minutes later. As with all weird things that have been happening to my body lately I'm just going to assume that it is another lovely perk of being pregnant. Anybody know of anything I can do to make these spasms not happen anymore?

It's called a "charleyhorse," and is common during pregnancy.  The way to make it go away fastest (even though nothing makes it go away that very second) is to hold your leg with the foot at right angles to it (as though standing on the floor) rather than to let your toe be pointed.  It will abate faster if your foot is in that position.  You could google "charleyhorse" for more information.  Take some extra potassium, that might help, and calcium with magnesium.
