My 7 yo daughter has had constant stomach aches for over 2 years

by mlaschliman, Sep 07, 2004 12:00AM
My daughter has had constant stomache aches for a very long time.  The first time she got sick was when she was 2yo.  Whatever we gave her to eat or drink (including water) she threw up within seconds.  After the hospital xrayed her tummey, they found it enlarged with air.  This lasted 3-4 days and was repeated the next year as well. At age 5, her kindergarten teacher called me to tell me she complained constantly.  We took her to a GI Dr. that told us she can't pass gas and possibly feels her food digest.  After tests, ect, her put her on 10mg dose of Bentyl - 1 hour before each meal.  This helped immensely!  After some time, we just were taking the lunch dose, and then we took her off completely Jan 2004.  After about 2 weeks, she was constanlty complaining of these stomache aches again.  So, we started the Bentyl again and the complaining stopped.  Now, she has started to complain again.  I've gone back to the Bentyl 3X a day and it isn't helping.  She complains all of the time and I feel completly at a loss because I don't know how to help her! We have tested her for Lactose Intolerance and nothing there. She also takes 1 T of Benefiber everyday and that has seemed to help. Everytime this starts up, the DR thinks she is constipated, but then after xrays, ect says she wasn't.  I know she isn't! I just need some advice. My poor girl feels left out at school and different because she doesn't feel well.  Her 2nd grade teacher called me today telling me that she just looks and act miserable.  The GI Dr can't get me in for a month.  Any advice would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Have you thought of things like Chron's disease or Colitis?  You might also consider acid reflux disease.  I knew a guy who's 2 year old had it and constantly was sick to his stomach.  Other than that I would just keep going to Drs and if one stops looking then go to another until you find an answer.  I'm so sorry for your daughter.

Hi, has your doctor checked her for IBS??? I don't know how young they can have it but I would think it would be worth asking about...???? Maybe!!

have her checked for celiac disease too. it can only be diagnosed through a biopsy of the intestine, but it can really cause a multitude of symptoms, including the ones you've mentioned.
Good Luck!
