My First OB Appt Wasn't At All What I Expected

I had my first OB appt today at the good old Naval Hospital.  Well, I'm 6 weeks 3 days past LMP and all my appointment conisted of was speaking to an RN about my medical history and getting a bunch of literature.  They wouldn't do any bloodwork today and they didn't do any kind of physical exam let alone an ultrasound.  They also have a policy that they do not make appts w/ the doctor until you are 10 weeks past LMP.  Does this sound normal?  It has me a little concerned.  I was hoping to get checked out today and get some reassurance that everything is progressing as it should.

unfortunately, in many practices that is normal. When i first found out i was pregnant and called my obgyn i got the same response. I promptly found a new practice and was thrilled with the care and attention i got there. I'm assuming you're military and that may not be an option.

i ended up having to go out of network to get my amazing doctor. he does not take insurance, but his staff does the work of submitting claims as out of network for you. my insurance is good, and pays 80% out of network, which left us to pay 20%. it was not as bad as i thought it would be- the entire pregnancy cost us about $3000 out of pocket. and this doctor did an ultrasound at every visit, saw me several times in the first trimester, and in general provided me with fantastic care. i never waited more than 5 minutes to be seen.

I would have thought they would have done blood work at the very least.  Make sure your hcg is progressing and your progesterone levels are good.  I mean how do they know it isn't ectopic or something like that.

I know that's exactly what I was thinking.  I specifically requested an hcg test too and the dr refused the nurse who was asking for me.  I'm irritated but a lot of people on here and in another forum I'm in have responded saying it's normal procedure. My friend who had a baby and my other friend who's an RN also said it was totally normal...so I guess everything is alright.  Honestly if I could have a lab in my house I'd be happy to get my hcg levels reported every 2 days :0) I'm so neurotic!
