Need advice on freezers

I've been storing the pumped milk in the freezer and I"m running out of space in my frigde (I was getting chicken out for dinner and got nearly killed by everything flying out of the freezer).  We live in an apartment and have a relatively small kitchen.  Can anyone recommend a freezer that is not too small yet doesn't take up half of my kitchen?  Also, which one is better, upright or chest freezers?  There are so many to choose from and if I'm investing $ into one, I want the one that's worth buying (naturally).  TIA.

Chest freezer is the best for storing breast milk, it will last up to 12 months at the bottom of a chest freezer, upright freezer I would say six months tops (it's the way the heat/cold distributes when the doors are opened that makes the difference). You can buy chest freezers that are about the same size as apartment refrigerators. I'm sure i saw one in Walmart recently. Have a look on line, large electrical retailers should have a good selection.

P.S. It's great to hear you have such a good supply.

when i was pumping we filled up an extra small upright freezer.

space is tight in my tiny house, and we were able to put the freezer in a closet under the stairs. we put a thermometer in there and the temp was consistently -10 degrees, so the milk would've been good for up to a year. plus, if you're using it for milk only, you don't open it too often.

i like this freezer because unlike a chest freezer, everything is easily accessed. now that i'm out of milk, it's great for everything else.

to keep the milk organized, i stored the milk storage bags in gallon sized ziplocks labeled with the month it was pumped- each ziplock held about 10 6 oz bags. because all the milk in the ziplock was about the same date, i would just grab a ziplock and put it in my kitchen freezer so it was even more convenient.

thank you ladies!
mum- I made the mistake of not freezing enough with DD and lost my milk at 6 months.  I'm not making the same mistake again.  If I freeze enough milk to last 3 months, I'll be very happy.
