Never ending miscarrage(miscarriage)

by Lissa776, Jul 08, 2007 12:00AM
Hi,
I'm 30y.o and 14 weeks into first pregnancy. I have been bleeding (moderate to light flow)  for 7+ weeks and had 3 ultrasounds that diagnosed a blighted ovum. 3 weeks ago I took Cytotec and had no cramping, no increased bleeding, no clots, nada. Intially my HCG level continued to increase post Cytotec and have recently (this week) started to drop. My question is: How long does it normally take to pass all the tissue? I haven't passed a single clot. I've been carrying around a placenta for 14 weeks and am getting tired of frequent HCG checks. Plus I had gastric bypass 2yrs ago and, although previous to all this my labs were perfect, I am prone to anemia and am starting to feel run down/tired. My OB would really prefer not to do D&C but I want this to be over. Is it unreasonable to insist on D&C? How long is too long to wait for nature to take it's course?

Do you know why your OB doesn't want to do a D&C?  I would be concerned that it would start to become infected in your uterus.  Since you are anemic, are you taking an iron supplement?  During my miscarriage, my OB put me on iron b/c of the bleeding.  I would really start asking some questions.  Seven weeks is a long time to be going through that.  Wish you the best!

I don't think it's at all unreasonable to insist on a D&C.  This is not only taking a toll on your body, but also on your emotions as well.  For the sake of your sanity, if nothing else, they should do the D&C if that's what you want.  Does your doctor have reasons why he doesn't want to?  I would think they should be really great reasons if he's putting you through this for so long, and if not, then I would definately insist.  A person's body/mind can only take so much.

Sometimes it takes more than one dose of cytotec for it to work.  I'm sorry that it did not help you along, it should work within a few hours, it helps to dialate so it sounds like it did nothing at all for you.  I'm surprised your Dr. did not have you take it again.  It gets a little intense though, and at this point it is not unreasonable for you to ask for a D&C.  It's hard to carry a placenta and feel sick for no reason, you just want to move on.  I had a m/c due to a blighted ovum at 11 weeks last summer.  The cytotec did work for me the first try though.  My Dr. offered a D&C but said it may be a better option to skip the procedure if I felt comfortable passing the sac at home with the Cytotec.  I was able to m/c that weekend and try again ASAP since I had not had my uterus scraped.  I would talk to your Dr., it's been quite awhile and it's hard on your body and your emotions to keep carrying it around.  Good luck with your Dr. , I hope you feel better soon.

I had to do 2 rounds of Cyotec, and I'm not sure if it ever actually worked....nor have I ever heard a good thing about it.  I bled for  8 weeks....sometimes heavy, light, moderate, cramps, no cramps, labor like cramps, clots, and no clots.  When that was over, I immediately had my first period.....

It was a total of 9 weeks bleeding....a nightmare.  I am sorry for your loss.
If they will do a d&c, have them do an u/s first to determine how much products of conception remain.  It would be silly to go through all of this, only to end up w/surgery.  I bet your almost done, and if you wait it out....it will pass.  You may not have much tissue to pass, as w/a blighted ovum, there is little or no fetal tissue...just the beginning of a placenta.
