Hi Ladies, My 6 week old seems to be spittingBaby spitting up Spitting up up alot after he eats and sometime even an hour after I feed him he spits up and sometimes it is more watery and not just white. He is formula fed and is in the 95th percentile for weight gain. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if anyone has any ideas what I can do for my littleLittle noses decongestant Little tummys guy. Also he is on Enfamil Lipil with Iron. Thanks in advanceAdvance care plus Advance relief for you help!
I aree with Andi don't add cereal to the bottle. I have 3 cildren and my first 2 spit from birth up until about 4 months maybe. I did try chaning formula but nothing worked for me. Enfamil does have a formula called gentle ease, you might want to try that. I believe when you start giving cereal it should be on a spoon, which I did start at 6 weeks, personal choice.
Just for the record with all of mine I used a spoon too. I just simply said that our peditrican suggested this to us for my 4th and I did try it for a little bit but it was to no avail. He has reflux that is why it was suggested, but I was feeding him off the spoon as well. The idea behind the little bit of cereal in the bottle was to "thicken it up" as the doctor said, that is why I suggested the Enfamil A.R., it already has cereal premixed in the formula.
I do think Nutramigen is good and I was thinking about trying the Gentlease as well. However, that is for gasiness, not a lot to do with spitting up.
Anyway, I just wanted to clarify the cereal thing, not to step on any toes....it was not something I thought was a good idea at all, just the doctor's choice.
I had the same problem with my youngest. I thought he was spitting up all his food. Please don't try cereal, at that stage, their little bodies aren't ready for it. When/if you switch formulas, keep your little one upright for at least a 1/2 hour. That's the only thing I found to help. He still spit up a little, but not nearly as much.
Did you doc tell you to switch to did you do it on your own. I am waiting for his doc to call me back. It just worries me becasue when he spits up he seems to cough which has just started within the last day or 2 and I am scared it is going to choke or something. I am paranoid this is my 1st LOL
There are a few things you can try. I was having some of the same problems with my ds, he is now 13 weeks. 1st the I was told by his doctor to add a teaspoon of rice ceral to the infamil w/Iron Lipil, that worked for awhile but he also has reflux so with his belly aches from the gas they have now switched him to the Nutrimigen (it is expensive though) but works, he rarely ever spits up. Also, the same as mentioned above with the cereal, you could just try the Enfamil Lipil A.R., it works well from what my friends have said and eliminates a lot of the spitting up. Best of luck!
I switched on my own. IT doesn't hurt to try it. I heard so many people who have given their baby Enfamil or Similac and had a problem with the baby constantly spitting up. My dd used to projectile vomit.
Thanks fro all your advice ladies. I agree about the cereal thing and I would never try that I have a friend who gave her 2 week old cereal in his bottle becasue she wanted him to slepp longer and she had nothing but proplems. I am still waiting to hear from the doctor to see what she recommends.
Hi my son did the same thing finaaly after trying everything my doctor told about Enfamil A+ Thickened this fomula is designed for babies who spit up 4 or more times a day. I guess it thickens when it gets into there stomach. It worked for my son. Good luck. Marci
I was not telling anyone to give their baby cereal I was just telling my experience. Dr's do tell you to hold off on cereal but my mom gave me advice as well, the cereal worked for my situation at the time. I do believe in giving cereal at a young age but that is my personal experiences. Yes, the gentle ease is for gassy babies but my sil gave it to hers and he stopped spitting up, just thought it might help.
Something really funny about drs. Tey feel as though they must go by guide lines. I have a very good friend who is a dr and he told me he gave his son cereal at 4 weeks old even though dr's are supposed to tell you to wait, he told me there was nothing wrong with giving cereal as long as they tolerate it. Anyway it worked for me, I had very hungry babies. Of course for my preemie I waited a lot longer.
Well said! and thank you, there for a minute I felt like I was being ganged up on for "suggesting such a thing"...LOL. I too was told the same thing you were. With my first which has been 14 years ago, she was a big baby and fussy from being hungry so at a few weeks old we were feeding her a small portion of cereal off a spoon and she did fine. And then I just continued with the other three. My g-ma always talks about how crazy everything is now, when she was coming up (of course she is 73) they ate grits, scrambled eggs and anything else soft they could tolerate and drank either breastmilk or goat's milk so go figure. Now days the doctors have to go by the guidelines to cover their rears, and I certainly DO NOT blame them for that. What works for one baby definately might not work for the next this is true, even in the same families. My kids have been like day and night. Anyway, I am apologizing once again to EVERYONE if I stepped on any toes with the cereal thing. Like I stated that is what our pedi suggested to us. I hope it all works out with everyone who has a baby that spits up or has colic, ours is improving so.....
I definately think I will try the Gentlease though, I recieved a coupon for that the other day, b/c he does still have a lot of gas! You ladies have a nice day!
Well my pedi called back and said that he shouldnt be eating more then 2-3 oz but if my baby is hungry I am going to feed him. Sometimes after eating 4 oz a half hour later he is still hungry and we cant trick him any longer with the pacifire so we give him another oz or 2, she really isnt giving us any answers I wonder if I should just try the thicker enfamil formula and see how it goes.
Angiconda - Is your little one in any pain when spitting up??? I have almost posted about this just because it took me FOUR MONTHS to figure out my DD and now that I finally have a happy baby I want to tell the world!
When she was a few days old I first noticed her spitting up a lot. The doc said as long as she is a "happy spitter" then it's more a laundry problem. By two weeks she was fussy all the time, so we got her on some acid reflux medicine (Zantac). It never seemed to do the trick. After a month we switched to Omeprazole (prilosec) and still didn't see much difference in her fussiness. I just assumed I had a "difficult" baby. After doing a LOT of research on my own, I learned that the medicine she was on was NOT the correct medicine (for various reasons) AND she wasn't even close to being on the correct dosage. After submitting my research to her doctor, we got her on a new medicine and I FINALLY have my happy baby!!! Unfortunately b/c it took 4 months to get it figured out, my dd still has some sensory issues to work out. I guess I would to if I was in pain for that long. My DD was gaining weight "appropriately" so that's why the doctor thought it "wasn't a big deal". He didn't live with us though! After he witnessed a few of her fussy episodes during visits he finally realized she needed something more!
Long story short...if your little one is acting like they are in pain, please look into the possibilities of acid reflux further. I recommend a medicine called Zegerid. Do some research on it...it's wonderful!!!!
Please let me know if you have any further questions!
I AGREE WITH MOMMIE2. MY LITTLE GIRL WAS SPITTING UP ALOT. BY 5 WEEKS OLD SHE WAS THROWING UP... THE DR. SAID SHE HAD REFLUX. I HAD TO GIVE HER THE CEREAL. AND HOLD HER UP FOR 30 MINUTES AFTER EATING. SHE DID SO MUCH BETTER WITH THE FIRST BOTTLE. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM AFTER THAT... SHE DID GET A LITTLE CHUNCKY. BUT SHES THREE NOW AND SHE'S HEALTHY. I REALLY THINK YOU SHOULD DO WHATEVER THE DR. TELLS YOU. I JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW ALOT OF US DEALT WITH THIS. AND THE DR. DID TELLS US TO GIVE THEM CEREAL.
I just wanted to say that I wasn't trying to start an argument about the whole cereal thing. My dr also told me to try cereal at 4 or 6 weeks, I can't remember. I did try that with my youngest and it brought upon more headaches for me (belly aches, choking, etc). My oldest took cereal great in the bottle. but I would never try it again b/c what I experienced with my youngest. I had a bad experience, as others have good ones. It was my opinion.
MY DD IS 8 WEEKS NOW AND SHE WAS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING. I WAS GIVING HER THE ENFAMIL WITH IRON AND SHE HATED THAT AFTER THE FIRST THREE WEEKS. I SWITCHED HER TO ENFAMIL GENTLEASE FOR FUSSINESS AND GAS. SHE LOVES THAT STUFF, BUT WAS SPITTING UP MORE THAN SHE WAS TAKING IN. SO I TRIED THE ENFAMIL FOR BABIES WHO SPIT UP FREQUENTLY AND THAT REALLY UPSET HER STOMACH. HER DOCTOR TOLD ME TO PUT A TINY BIT OF THE CEREAL FORMULA IN WITH THE GENTLEASE. SHE IS EATING 6 OUNCES SO I WOULD PUT TWO AND A HALF SCOOPS OF THE GENTLEASE AND THEN A HALF SCOOP OF THE CEREAL FORMULA. SHE SEEMED TO BE OK WITH THIS. ALSO I BURP HER MORE NOW AND THAT REALLY SEEMS TO HELP. SHE WAS SPITTING UP SO MUCH IT WAS KIND OF EMBARASSING WHEN WE WERE OUT IN PUBLIC PLACES..I KNOW SHE CAN'T HELP IT, BUT IT WOULD GO EVERYWHERE. SO NOW I FEED HER 1 TO 1 1/2 OUNCES AND THEN BURP AND SO ON AND IT REALLY HELPS. ALSO AFTER I FEED HER I PUT HER IN HER SWING OR BOUNCY SEAT, BUT DON'T TURN EITHER ONE OF THEM ON. I THINK HER BEING IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION HELPS THE FOOD STAY DOWN MORE. BUT YOUR CHILD MAY ALSO HAVE THE REFLUX THING, BUT THOSE THINGS HELP WITH THAT TOO. GOOD LUCK. HOPE THIS HELPS.
I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT MY DD DID THE COUGH THING TOO. SHE STILL DOES THAT AND SHE ONLY DOES IT WHEN SHE DRINKS TOO FAST AND I GUESS FEELS LIKE SHE IS CHOKING. SOMETIMES SHE JUST DOES IT OUT OF THE BLUE. THE DOC SAID IT WAS OK AS LONG AS SHE DIDN'T DO IT A LOT IN A SMALL PERIOD OF TIME. SHE ONLY DOES IT EVERY NOW AND THEN, BUT IT DID SCARE ME AT FIRST, BUT NOW WHEN I HEAR HER I JUST FEEL OK B/C ITS LIKE SHE KNOWS TO DO THAT SO SHE WON'T CHOKE AND THEN SHE TURNS HER HEAD TO THE SIDE.
I don't think anyone was offended or upset about you sharing your experience. I think the more experiences we read or hear the better. Just because the cereal thing worked for me does not mean it will work for every baby. Some babies can handle cereal at an early age were as some can't. Hearing your story will help angiconda because if she tries the cereal and her little one gets fussy at least she knows that it is not working. Taking care of a baby is a trial and error thing sometimes. We all learn as we do. Sorry if you thought you were causing problems, but experiences is what angiconda was asking for, I think we should all share and let the one asking the quesiton take all the advice and decide. Please keep sharing.
Not to freak anyone out, but as I watch my tummy scar expand, any thought of lots of spitting up reminds me that when I was a baby I had pyloric stenosis (probably spelled wrong), which I guess made me an Olympic projectile vomiter until I had surgery at 3 months. But since I'm not a mom yet, I'm sure regular spitting up is the most likely explanation.
I'm new hear but thought I would add my daughter had pretty bad GER we actually thought it might of been pyloric stynosis because my husband had it as a child. My wonderful pediatrician recommended Enfamil A.R. and it was wonderful for us. We used it the full 12months and never had any problems.
My daughter is 6 weeks old and has been spitting up quite frequently as well during feedings(after a burp)and after feedings, sometimes when i am changing her diaper before her feed she spits up clear fluid with a little bit of formula in it, this is three to four hours after her last feeding. It doesn't seem to bother her too much and she is gaining wieght fine but I would still like to decrease the amount of times she is spitting up and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of a good formula that may help, I tried the Enfamil specifically for babies that spit up and it did help but it made her stool so firm she cried before she went, is there anything else I could try??
Do not add cereal to the bottle. There are many other things to do before even considering that.
Andi

Good day ladies!
It could be too much iron for the baby's belly.
