Newborn sleeping...

Is my son sleeping too much? He sleeps for a few hours and then wakes up to be changed and eat and falls asleep while eating and then a few hours later wakes up to eat again. He is really never up. He is 11 days old today. Also... when should I start putting him on a schedule?

Babies sleep a LOT.  While he's being changed,  does he appear alert?  Does he cry loudly when he wakes up if you don't get to him right away?

He'll let YOU be put on a schedule to take care of him when he's ready to have regular waking and sleeping.  ;D

All newborns really do for the first two months is eat and sleep and eat and sleep.  Don't worry about it - just let him get the sleep he needs.  It isn't really until after about two months that you will start getting some "real" interaction from him.  Gradually he will stay up for longer periods of time.  And babies usually fall into their own schedule naturally...no reason to force one.  He will let you know what he needs!  Good luck!

Consider yourself lucky, sweetheart.  My kids never slept much from day 1 :(  If he appears to be interested in his surroundings fo an hour or so a day, he should be fine.

Newborns NEED their sleep.  It's what helps them grow and it's just what they do.  Newborns dont have a set schedule.  My DS didnt get one til around 3and a half months.  Even now, he still doesnt exactly follow it to the tee! lol

I read several books on baby schedules, and the thing that I learned is they are a waste of money and time... babies will develop their own schedule.. just try to be sensitive to their cues, allow them the quiet time they need to sleep and interaction when they are awake.
