Night Time Coughing

Hi All,

My daughter is 16 months old. She has been waking at night for almost 3 weeks now with a violent cough. She coughs, gags, retches and sometimes vomits. After 10 or 15 minutes, it fades away. She then sleeps the rest of the night. SOme mornings she coughs a bit- but not as violently as during the night. She has no cough at all during the day, no cold, no blocked nose, in good health otherwise. Its not a chesty cough- its as if she has something at the back of her throat that she is trying to cough up. But no rattle in her chest or throat, and no mucus from her nose.

We have tried just about everything. We use a saline nasal spray before bedtime, we have a plug in vapor thing, we have tried using a warm air humidifier, giving an over the counter cough syrup (suitable for babies), but nothing seems to help.

She had a similar cough back in May when she was 11 months old. It continued on and off for a few weeks, went away for a week, and then she got a 'proper' cough that escalated into a chest infection. Before she got the chest infection, I had brought her to the doctor to ask about the cough at night. She just said it could be a post nasal drip, and reccommended the vapour plug in, nasal spray etc.

So please can anyone offer advice? I am wondering if it could be some sort of allergy- but why just once at night? Is there anything I cna do to help her, or should I go back to our GP?

The nasal spray, if given before she is laying down, seems to me like it would make her cough, It is used to loosen mucous, which means your laying her down and the mucous is draining down her throat. My son coughs at night he has allergies though, I prop him up on a pillow
