No heartbeat visable at 6 weeks U/S very worried

by jendel, Jul 11, 2007 12:00AM
Can anyone tell me and reassure me that this is quite normal, I had a ultrasound yesterday the fetus has grown to 5mm but no fetal heart was seen in the scan and I have been warned that it my not be a viable pregnancy, I have been booked in for a re-scan in 9days but I am so worried that when I have the re-scan they will tell me that the fetus has died, I had a little bit of spotting a week ago but the doctor said it was nothing to worry about. I have still got tender breasts, has anyone else been in this situation? Is it possible that the fetus is developing a little more slowly or the chances are that I will see the heart beat in the next scan? I am so worried and scared!!!

Hi i had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks and was advised that they may not be able to detect a heart beat due to it being so early. I explained to the doctor why i was having one so early. So after he did the abdo scan he could not detect any heart beat so due to the reason i was having such an early one he offered a endo vaginal which is better at detecting a heart beat and with doing that we confimed a heart beat. So as they were unable to detect a heart beat for you it may not be that there isn't one and that everything is fine. Try not to worry i hope everything goes great for you one you next visit GOOD LUCK:):)

It is possible that is why they will rescan you.  Some people do not see the heartbeat yet at 6 weeks.  I went at 6 weeks and her heartbeat was very low and they told me I might lose her.  Low and behold when i went back after 2 weeks she had a good strong heartbeat.  To be honest, it can turn out either way.  If she had grown to where she should be at 6 weeks, you def. still have a chance.  I know 9 days seems like a lifetime but try to keep busy and keep your mind occupied and it will come soon enough.  Keep us posted!

hi, i ad an internal u/s at 6 wks, there wasn't even a sac, never mind fetus or HB i wnet back at 7wk and the sac was there, yolk and a 2mm fetal pole, still no h/b at 8 wks i went back there he was with a very strong hb. I am currently just over 26wks pg with  a healthy baby boy.

I would never have an early u/s again.

I hope you see something in 9 days but I agree with the previous poster that that may even be a little early.  As I said, I waited over two weeks after my 6 week scan because my doctor was confident I wouldn't see anything at 7 weeks.  I can't remember if my second scan was 8 or 9 weeks but it was def. more promising.  Make sure it is transvaginal and not abdominal... it is far too early to detect a heartbeat with an abdominal ultrasound!

I dont want to upset you but would like to share my experience, Although many have seen hb at 8 wks but I wasnt lucky enough.I did hpt 3 days after missed period and was positive and I had severe pain so when to the doc had US and showed 1.8mm sac. I was very happy as was planning for more than a yr, had my second US at 6 wks 4 days and they found yolk sac and fetal pole with sac measuring 1.58cm and gestational age showed 5wk 4 days but no heartbeat was found and the doc scared me of missed abortion, advised for blood works to be done HCG count showed 25950 which was very good and 48 hrs later was 35267 it didnt double but doc was optimistic and advised US after 10 days , had my US on 2nd july when i was 8 wks 1 day and still no heartbeat seen and fetus didnt grow , sac age showed 6wks 4 days and was confirmed of missed abortion. was admitted in hosp and terminated pregnancy with vaginal tablets which was so painful and was told next day after scan there is left over tissues and will expel in a day or two and to come for a scan to confirm all clear in a week but was facing acute pain and was admitted on sat again and went thru D&C. i WAS TOTALLY SHATTERED AS LOST MY BABY AND TOP OF THAT HAD TO GO THRU ALL THE pain. The doc could have done D&C the first time instead of doing it thru tablets. also doc said she suspects Endrometrisis and has advised me to take contraceptive pills for 3 weeks and has advised me to plan after 3 months I dont know how safe it is to take contraceptive pills, can anyone advise if it helps to cure Endrometrises. I'm sorry to discuss all this I dont mean to upset anyone but just dont want anyone to go thru this and want to advise always opt for D&C if missed abortion as tablets are very painfull and cant be sure if we expel all the tissues. Please advise what should I do next as scared and dont want to go thru this again...

Your experience is totally normal and also very possible.  It is jsut hard telling with this poster because she is only 6 weeks right now and sometimes that is just too early to worry.
I hope for her sake that she doesnt have a situation such as yours.  I have been there and had to have a D&C once when I was younger (only 22) and it was truly devastating.  I still know that God had his reasons (and im not religious at all).
Poster, we will all pray for you.  As I said before, it can turn out either way and 6 weeks is just VERY early to assume anything!

I wouldn't get discouraged.  I too was also upset and worried when we went for our 6 weeks appointment - we only saw one sac and nothing else.  We went for our 7 week u/s and found 3 sacs, 3 "peanuts" and 3 separate heartbeats.  All very healthy!!  I asked the same question, and was told a week makes all the difference.  I know you are excited, but just wait cause it's true - a week makes all the difference in the world.  Good luck.

I had a vaginal u/s today and they couldnt find a visible heartbeat as well.  In addition the measurements were all different.  Sac was reading 5wks gestation while others were reading 6/12 weeks and one was 4 weeks.  I am waiting for my blood work to see what my hormone levels look like.  Anyone have any experience with different measurements?  Thank you.

Don't get discouraged yet. I've had 2 m/c's. In the first one, everything was clear - the size of the uterus wasn't what it was supposed to be. The second time, I was diagnosed with blighted ovum (who the heck ever came up with that name!) and had a D&C at 7 weeks, 1 day. The thing is, except that they couldn't see the embryo, everything was where it should be - sizewise and everything. At the time, I didn't question the doctors, but later on I've heard from many people who've been in the same exact situation, declined D&C, and went on to have perfectly healthy babies. Now, I'll never know if I made the right choice or not. Bottom line - wait and see, and try not to worry (yeah, that's me talking, one who hasn't been able to concentrate on anything since finding out I'm pregnant again)

Can anyone help?  I had a vaginal u/s today and an abdominal u/s.  Tech could not see heartbeat.  According to the doctor I'am suppose to be 10 wks pregnant, nonetheless fetus is only showing 6 wks and no heartbeat.  Husband wants to wait.  Dr. recommended vaginal pills to provoke miscarriage.  Dr. also scared me because she states that according to my last menstrual period I should be 10 wks and since fetus shows 6 wks, she says it could be something congenital or something wrong with the egg.  Please help..
