Numbness in hands

Numbness in hands

My hands are going numb and sometimes falling asleep.  I find that I wake up in the mniddle of the night with a terrible feeling in them!  Is this normal?  I'm only not quite 7 months and they are already too swollen for my wedding rings! Has anyone else worn their rings on a chain around there neck?  Ok, I can't type with these fingers!

When I was having numbness a few wks ago my doctor wanted me in the hospital and seen by a neurologist. Mine just went away or lessened enough to where i dont notice it as much. Call your doctor and see what he says.

I think you need to check in with your doc.  This could be an early sign of preclempsia.  Or it could be carpal tunnel which happens a lot in pregnancy.  I am 27 weeks and my rings feel tight.  With my last child I couldn't wear them from about 16 weeks on.

I've been going through this for weeks now.  I actually posted awhile back about it because I was freaking out.  It started with my right leg from the knee up.  Still don't have feeling in it.  Completly numb all the time.  Then my left hand started going numb from my finger tips to elbow.  The doctor sent me to the er for a MRI.  Came back clear.  I've probably been consistantly without feeling for 10 weeks or so.  I guess its normal??   Like the above poster said, check in with your doctor because whats normal for me may not be for you.  I think this is just all part of pregnancy.  Especially if you type for a living like I do.  They said carpel tunnel comes out.  Did you waitress or anything before pregnancy??

I am not trying to dismiss the possible seriousness of this....
You just need to mention it to your dr.  Call on Monday, and tell them what you have been experiencing.  Based on your personal information and backround, your ob/gyn may refer you to a neurologist.

It very well is normal for extremitites to 'fall asleep' easier during pregnancy, especially while your laying down.  Becuase you have almost 50% more blood in your same little veins, the flow is slower, and can cause temporary numbness.  This is considered normal;  however, your dr. must rule out the possibility of any other complications that may result in the numbness.

This warrants a call to your dr.  I wouldn't place and emergency call by any means, but the next day they are open, I would certainly inform him/her.

which hand? i always have it happen to my left hand, especially when i'm sleeping, but sometimes if i'm just sitting still. and which fingers? i mentioned it to my cardiologist, and he asked which fingers. i told him the pinky. he asked if it was just the pinky, and not the middle, ring finger, and pinky. sure enough, i started paying closer attention, and he was right- it's all 3 fingers, but worst in the pinky so i don't notice the other 2 so much. he said often in pregnancy, the extra weight/pressure puts pressure on a nerve and that happens. he said if it was the other half of my hand, it would be carpal tunnel, also common in pregnancy. either way, he wasn't concerned. he said sleeping on my other side may help. if i sleep on the right, it never happens. it happens when i'm on my back or left side.

my hands, arms, legs , feet all go numb, but did before i was pg. after talking to your dr, if he finds its not anything to worry about, those splints youget  from walgreens or anywhere are great . they keep your wrist straight and it helps quite a bit, i used them years ago and i think it might be time to get some new ones.

I had carpel tunnel with my 2 nd  pregnancy and had to get surgery to relieve it in my right hand.  It got so bad that the fear of permanent nerve damage was a possibility.  I will tell you my symptoms.  My fingers would go numb, I couldn't hardly write, type, cook, or hold a glass of water.  It would slip right out of my hand and break.  The pain would go up my arm and into my shoulder and neck.  The pain was worse at night because I would sleep with my wrist bent and that would cause more pressure on the tunnel in the wrist.  I ended up getting wrist/hand braces and wore them at night.  That helped some.  I was 6 months preg. when I got the surgery and I had it done with a local.  I did have some problems with carpel tunnel before getting pregnant.  It just got worse with the pregnancy.  I would say if you do not have the pain going up the arm and into the shoulder, it is probably something else.  Either way, a quick trip to the Dr. would be a good idea.

I have this too!!!!!

I am in the 36th week now and for the past 5 days or so this has been happening to me.  Mine sounds exactly like what "tiredbuthappy" described but in both hands.  I have this numbness in my middle, ring and pinky fingers on both hands.  It comes in the middle of the night and is there when I wake up and my hands seem a little swollen then too..... but then for me, it goes away during the day.

I figured it has to do with the weather - because for the past 5 days, we have had warmer and humid weather here.  When the weather changed, that is when I started having this.  Up until this past week, I didnt have this at all....
