Nystatin not working on Toddler Yeast Infection

Nystatin not working on Toddler Yeast Infection

My son had pneumonia and was put on an antibiotic.  He then developed a severe rash days after he went off of his medication.  At first the Doctor's said it was just a diaper rash from the diarrhea he had from the antibiotic but then it got worse.  I took him back and they said he had a yeast infection.  He has been on Nystatin for 6 days now but his rash is not looking any better except for that the redness is not as bad.  Does anybody know any other things to try or suggestion of different Rx that would help clear this up?

Depending on how you feel about trying alternative methods, I've always used Natren's Acidophilus for infants and children, along with a natural mild chlorophyl.  Depending on severe the yeast infection is, this method will actually take it away anywhere between 2 to 6 days.  I've also used this method during ear infections b/c yeast builds up and can irritate the ear which then produces excessive wax...I hope you and he will find comfort soon.  It's always hard as a mom to see your little person ill!  Best of Luck!

Again, depending on how old your little guy is, yogurt is great.  But it should be plain and have the cultures a/b in it.  In addition, if you are breast feeding, you too can take yogurt and acidophilus and it will go through your milk to the baby.  And another note, depending on age, he or you should cut out sugar.  Sugar will feed the yeast.  If I think of any more, I'll try to post.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll try anything. He is only 18 months.  We have a Doctors appt. on Friday so hopefully they will also have some better insight this time.  My 7 month old got the pneumonia as well I just hope he doesn't end up with the same thing.  I have been feeding both of them yogurt everyday and the oldest doesn't have a lot of sugar

The benefits w/ all the natural stuff is that it won't just get rid of the symptoms, which antibiotics are designed to do (and don't get me wrong, I'm not against antibio.), Many doctors recommend acidophilus after anti. treatment.  The natural stuff actually clears it away and improves the health more internally.  It is nourishing and cleansing it, not suppressing it.  I also use it as preventative measures.  I always try this method first and then if symptoms ( colds, illness) persist than I consider using antibiotics.

Nystatin didn't work on my daughter. Diflucan was much more effective.

Also, he could have had an allergy to the antibiotic, and may not have yeast at all. Have you tried some sort of cream like benadryl or hydrocortisone? Ask his Dr. 1st on those.

if youve been using the nystatin cream, or ointment, and that hasnt worked, i would suggest asking the Dr about Mycostatin. its a mixture of 2 ingredients. nystatin for the fungal part, and triamcinolone for the rashy part. nystatin cream worked well for my dd, so i never tried mycostatin, but its written alot by the pediatrician. good luck!

Thanks everyone for your help!  I took him to the Dr. and they said it was the worst yeast infection they had ever seen on a toddler.  They prescribed him Econozole and now it is almost gone.
