OUCH!!!!! My DD is starting to bite when breastfeeding.

OUCH!!!!! My DD is starting to bite when breastfeeding.

OMG, my nipples are killing. My dd is using my nipples as a teether when she's nursing. What can I do to get her to stop. Even when she's not biting, the breastfeeding is uncomfortable because my nipples are so sore from her biting. Btw, she's almost 7 mos and she's got 3 teeth.

Ouchy!  Wow, 7 months already.  Gavin has one tooth but not all the way out, he will be 6 months next Sun.  He hasn't tried to bite but has pulled several times.  You should tell her NO firmly and stop the nursing session for a while, then try again.  My MIL told me to flick him if he does it but I hope I don't have to do that.

I have gone through two babies with teeth and am on my third (his first two teeth popped in a week or so ago and he will be 6 mos on the 28th). My second was a real biter and my 1st actually bit me hard enough to break the skin and cause masitits when he was 10 months old! My advice is to stop the nursing session and resume it later. That is what I have done and it worked for my first and third. T was stubborn so I had to resort to the loud NO and quitting the nursing session. Never had to flick, seemed awful to do that. They are just babies and they don't know much better.

Yes, I think flicking is aweful too......with Gavin 's personality, I think he will just bite me for a laugh!

The firm no worked for mine who only bit once, plus I put them down (maybe they were like 9 or 10 months though, both late teethers). Nursed through 2 years old, full mouth of teeth, they never bit me again, sweeties.

Thanks ladies for the tips. I will definitely try a firm NO and then try to break the latch (or shall I say "bite") and resume nursing later. I would try pumping but she doesn't seem to take to the bottle while she's teething. Every time I give her a bottle lately- surprise, surprise- she just bite on the nipple!

How about pumping and feeding her that way?  I quit breastfeeding Ariella at 7 months (well, she was a few days shy of her 7 months birthday) and she bit me a few times and it hurt like heck.  The dr suggested that I pump the milk and give it to her through the bottle.  Since my milk dried up before I had to do it, I never had to deal with it.  Btw, she's got two teeth and we have a feeling that her top teeth are coming out since she's been "scratching" her upper gums.  We'll see....

for me a firm NO just made dd grin (im in for it later) she bit me all the time, my grandmother told me to flick her but i felt bad, so anyway i hope you find a technique that works! please let us know if you do, i dont want months of biting with the next one, i suffered through it and in about 2 months she stopped on her own, i guess because i ignored it rather then made a big scene and a loud OUCH because she also thought that was very funny, little stinker

My son recently gummed me particularly hard while suddenly pulling, and I jumped and yelled "OW!", and he burst into tears!  I felt so bad.  I don't know how he would take flicking or the big NO.  :)
