Ovarian Cysts- VERY CONCERNED!!!

by StephW, Dec 08, 2003 12:00AM
Someone please help, I need reassurance!  I just got back from Doctors that confirmed that I had a cyst on my left ovary.  Every since my D&C in June, I've had some pain and/or cramps in my pelvic area and pain during intercourse.  I was afraid something was wrong and scheduled an Ultrasound which diagniosed I had a cyst.  I heard of the many kinds of cysts and know that they are very common.  BUT the most common ones: functional cysts are said to have no pain and go away in one to two menstural cycles.  This leads me to believe I have a much worse case, which MAY effect my fertility.

I have been TTC for past two months and am very concerned about this affecting my abilities of conceiving.  To make matters worse, I also found out last month that I have HPV.  So far pap smear and colpo reads fine, but I'm still very worried (even though doctor said HPV does NOT effect fertility).

I just wanted to know if any women here have had ovarian cysts and still conceived while having one.  Also, if anyone has had an ovarian cysts and had a Laparoscopy done to diagnose and treat the problem and was fine and able to conceive afterwards?
I'd appreciate any personal opinions and stories on this.  Thanks.

I was diagnosed with cysts on my ovaries earlier this year.  I had lap surgery done and I also had ovarian drilling done too (I have problems with ovulation).  I found out in early Nov. that I was pregnant.  I miscarried a week before Thanksgiving.  Please don't get discouraged.  I think I miscarried because I was not aware that was pregnant.  I had skipped my cycle in Sept. and started spotting off and on in early Oct. through Nov when I found out I was pregnant.  Just be very attentive to your body.  I have had pain with my cysts too but my doctor assures me that everything is fine - I have had ultrasounds done to keep a check on them to see if they go away with any medical help.  Good luck to you - I am TTC too - so I will keep you in my prayers.

Vickielyn,so after the lap surgery, you still have the cysts? (I thought lap surgery removes cysts) and do you know what kind of cyst you had or have?

I was also thinking that I may have had this cyst when I got pregnant in March and maybe that was the cause of my miscarriage.  Do you think having ovarian cysts has little if any effect on miscarrying? I am sorry to hear about your loss.  It's very hard to go thru a misarry when we are TTC.  I wish you the best! I'm sure our time is soon to come (I pray). But I am glad to hear that you were able to conceive. (even though it resulted in a miscarry).  Just keep hope and know that the miscarry had nothing to do with you and that there is really nothing we can do to prevent them.  Thanks for sharing your exp. with me.

Best of luck to us all for a healthy conception and pregnancy in the near future! ;o)

I know this is a different situation but when I was pregnant with my second son I went in for a u/s at 6weeks and the tech discovered that I had a cycst on my right ovary...My doctor then informed me that it was very common and that it will go away by itself. Well it did. Good luck and keep us updated on what happends.

I do apologize.  Yes, when I had the lap surgery done in March the cysts were removed,  the type of cysts that I had was simple/functional.  From what my doctor has informed me on, a cyst can co-exist with pregnancy without causing any difficulty. I guess it just depends on your body and all.  I wish I had more info to give you, if you are still interested I will be glad to download the info on cysts that I have at home on my PC (I am at work right now) tonight or tomorrow.  Let me know and I will be glad to do that for you.  You are in my prayers...

I have endometriosis and was diagnosed with ovarian cysts in May.  They were very painful.  I had laproscopy surgery in June to have them removed along with the endometriosis.  I got pregnant in November.  I dont think that having cysts will cause you not to be able to become pregnant or will cause m/c.  Think positive & Good luck.

by StephW, Dec 08, 2003 12:00AM
Thanks sthomab.  Its very reassuring to hear that it most likely won't cause any fertility problems.

And Vickielyn, yes I would like more info. on Ovarian Cysts.  That would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.  Do you need my email address?

I just wanted to comment that not every ovarian cyst is created equal.  Not all are harmful and not all have to be removed.  There are cysts called 'corpus luteum cysts' that are extremely normal and totally harmless, and they get reabsorbed by the body within 5 days.  So if your doc tells you that you have a cyst on your ovary, don't freak out like I did!  It could mean nothing at all.

Hi ladies, thanks for your comments.  I have one more question. Researching ovarian cysts on the web, I have not been able to grasp what is considered a "small" cyst or a "large" cyst.  The sites I've visited just say small or large and do not specify the size- cm, inches, etc.

I just want to know if my cyst is considered small/not-dangerous or large/potentially dangerous.  Also I've had this pain for about 4 months now, so its obviously not gone away.  I'm just very nervous about the fact that I may have to have surgery to remove it. AND PRAY if I do, that it's just the cyst and NOT my ovary as well.

I may be over-reacting, and I now it's not healthy to be worrying this much, but it's better safe then sorry.

I have HPV also and have had to have 2 laparascopies to remove growths. I was able to conceive with no problem. The only thing is, and I don't want to scare you is, since I had scar tissue on my cervix I was unable to dialate and had to have a c-section.

by StephW, Dec 09, 2003 12:00AM
To: skd7474, question??
skd7474, how small or big were your cysts?  And did you conceive while you had a cyst? If not, how long after lap surgery did you conceive.

Also was that scar tissue due to the lap surgery?

Even though you had to have a c-section, I am very glad to hear that you were able to conceive and have an overall healthy pregnancy. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't have a cyst. I had the growths removed from having HPV. I had I think 3 or 4 growths removed each time and the scar tissue was from the lap surgery.

Hi I am ttc and have been since August.  I have had to have my periods induced.  In the beginning of november my husband and I decided to just wait and see what Spring brings, because we didn't want to try clomid again.  ( i had a blighted ovum followed by d&c and was afraid clomid might have contributed... I am praying that clomid doesn't thin the lining causing it hard for implantation????)  In the end of November I started a period!  What a surprise!!  So we decided that since I had not been ovulating at all, we would try the clomid.  I had a positive ovulation test early december and then 4 days later had EWCM.  This is not usual for me, since I don't ovulate and never have regular periods.  Now I feel a cyst.  I have had one before, but it went away.  It was in the cycle preceeding the conception of my son.  I want to know if 1) the cyst means I ovulated 2) the EWCM means I ovulated 3)IF I CONCEIVED :-) (i know only time will tell on that last one, Ha)  I have been doing a lot of research and reading a lot of "comments" and the concensus is that EWCM = ovulation?  I am just looking for a glimmer of hope before I visit the doctor.  I am sure they will want b/w to check ovulation...  and I hate waiting for the phone call.  Thanks!  This is a wonderful support system!!!!

Hey momttc,

First of all, EWCM is a good indication that you ovulated, but itīs still very possible that you didnīt even though you have CM.  Because your body can be preparing to O and thatīs why you get CM, but your body doesnīt release the egg.  Thatīs why many experts and doctors say to chk CM in conjunction with BBT to ensure or verify that you indeed ovulate. As for cysts indicating that you did ovulate, I donīt know. I think you can g
et cyst from egg not releasing from follicle and continue to grow within or from egg releasing but not properly.  There are many reasons to why cysts form.  Many times its complelty NORMAL and HEALTHY.  This is something iīm just begining to learn about, so iīm not sure at all.

Now of course I canīt tell you whether or not you conceived this month (only hpt test can) lol.  But if your sure you ovulated and four days later noticed EWCM then that īcould be a signī cuz usually after ovulation you dry up quickly, unless you conceive(cuz from what Iīve been told and heard via internet)if you conceived your body produces some kind of hormone to keep environment safe for the egg, which means you are moist and have a discharge.

Dont quote me on this, its best way I can explain and I may not be completely right on this.  Hope this helps though!  GOOD LUCK!

To: Momttc- info. about cyst/ovulation
I found some info. on the internet about cyst corresponding with ovulation.  Well, sounds like more times than not the reason for having a cyst is from ovulation. (even though it's not good to happy to have ovarian cysts, I guess its good to know that at least you ARE ovulating!)

"Simple or "functional" cysts occur as a result of ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). Generally, if you don't ovulate, you won't form cysts. Most every menstruating woman develops an ovarian cyst every cycle. Sometimes the ovary does not ovulate and the cyst persists. It continues to enlarge and can become as big as a baseball. Eventually it will break and the woman may not even be aware that this has happened. Generally most cysts will resolve on their own within 1-3 months."

Thanks for the info...  I do think I ovulated :)  I am so happy... but of course cautious!!!  The discomfort has almost gone completely away today, signaling to me that it was a functional cyst!!  yeah :)  Not to mention the EWCM.  I spoke with my nurse today and she said she has never (not that it hasn't happened) had a patient get the EWCM and not ovulate!!!!  That was such good news, I can't even tell you.  She said with the information (pos OPK on Thurs, EWCM Sun, Pain/cyst Mon, no pain Wed) that i didn't even need to have the progesterone drawn unless I wanted to be sure.  She was fairly positive that things were going as planned.  She said she will keep her fingers crossed (me, I'll be praying) and hope for a pos preg test!

Thanks for the information.  Just a question: are you saying that you think if the egg would not have been release that my cyst would persist and get worse?  So you agree that I should be happy about the cyst "going away"?

Thanks again!!!!

I have a friend who is undergoing surgery this week for a "large" cyst.  I am not sure how large it is, but her doctor assured her that it would not affect conception.
In response to the comment about a cervix not dilating due to scar tissue....I had scar tissue on my cervix as well.  I had preterm contractions from 25 weeks on (daily).  I was in the hospital many times with nurses prepping for a premature baby.  My scar tissue kept my cervix from dilating fully.  I went into full-blown labor at 41 weeks.   The doctor had warned me that I may not ever fully dilate unless the scar tissue broke.  (I had dilated to 5 cm ...1cm  a week for the weeks prior) and at 6cm my scar tissue broke and I dilated 10 in a matter of minutes.  SO I was thankful for my scar tissue saving me from a very premature baby.  My delivery went off without a hitch, so there is hope for delivering vaginally with scar tissue.

In response to your questions.  Well, i'm not sure about having a cyst getting worse and persist if you do not ovulate.  I think I read something about that via internet, but I could have been mistaken.  And yes its VERY good to have the cyst go away on its own.  It's natural process of a women's reproductive system. (means you're functioning normal/good)

So are you on your 2ww?  Pls keep us posted and inform us of any 'good news' you may receive.  I'll be praying as well to hear my 'good news' soon!

That's a big YEAH on the 2ww.  This is the worst time!  You would think with this being my 2nd that I would be more patient?  I am just as scared this time as I was the last time.  For most women, their journey into motherhood begins with a BFP but for us it starts much earlier!  Most usually with shots, pills, b/w, ultrasounds...and then the scariest moment when you peek at the pg test to see if there's a line....  It's not fair :)  I have to say though, I was relieved to see sticky/white cm today.  If I would have seen EWCM again, I would have died.  I AM TIRED OF THE BD, hahahah we did BD cycle days 8-10-12-14-15-16. We were trying to stick with the every-other-day BD but then had EWCM on the 15th.... so I hope the sperm count was ok?!!!

When do you find out???  How is the cyst? I'll pray for you also!!  Thank you for your information!!

Well, my 2ww doesn't start until 12/20.  (I'm fertile/ovulate next week sometime)  I'll be in Florida visiting family during my 2ww, maybe they'll take my mind off of this TTC stuff.  I'm going to try to keep myself as busy as possible.  I've only been trying for two months, but I'm already feeling discouraged, so I'm going to try to not think about it ANYMORE and just let God take care of me.

I found out about cyst monday, 12/8- its 4.5cm (said to be little bigger than most, but not consider "large")  I know this will have some kind of effect on my fertility.  I just hope I can get this taken care of ASAP! My next appt to discuss my cyst and options about what to do isn't until Jan 5th!  I just hope everything turns out okay and hopefully be cyst-free in February to TTC healthfully.  I"ll keep you in my prays as well, thanks.  Let me know what happens this month.

I am glad my 2ww will be over before the Holidays.  I love my wine!!!!  I'll be able to take hpt next weekend.  I just posted a question about increased discharge?  As you know, I had EGCM on Sunday, little on monday, dry tuesday, tacky wed, tacky thursday, downpour of thick cloudy Friday and today.  I remember this with my last pregnancy but can't remember how early?  This may be normal, but it's pretty heavy.  I do have increased urination but good grief, If i did conceive, I am less than a week. So i am chalking this up to being anxious....

That is irritating to hear about your cyst!  I am sooo impatient!  I know you are excited to get the "ball rolling" .. you never know, you may conceive when you are not expecting to!!

I'll be thinking of you!  I love this website ;)  it's so nice to be able to talk to people that understand.  I think it keeps me from questioning friends and relatives to death.  I know i did with my first one.  No one knows we are trying this time.  It's hard on everyone to see me month after month still not pregnant...so we are flying under the radar this time ,ha  good luck next week!  momttc
