Ovulation Prediction Kit ???

by S-Michelle, Nov 19, 2005 12:00AM
Hello! I have been trying to get pregnant again since Sept. I miscarried in Aug so we have been trying again. The last 3 months we have been charting my temps, but we had no success, so I purchased a OPK kit and started checking my cervical mucus. My period went off on the 6 Nov and have been taking OPK since. This past week I got one dark line on the 15 Nov. and we TTC, but the test got lighter after that day and I haven't seen a LH surge since, but we have continued to TTC every other day. Yesterday I checked my cervical mucus and my cervis was high, but the OPK was negative I know is one of the signs of ovalution being near. My question is should I believe the ovulation kit and take it as I ovulated already even though my temps are still low or should I trust my cervical mucus. I appreciate any advice.

Im not really sure about your question but here is what I would do if I were you (because I did do it)...

Try ebay or babywishes.com or surch google for cheap ovulation test. I always get the thin strip green handle ones. You can get like 50 of them for 10 bucks some places... Then you start using 1 a day starting 5 days after the last day of your period and take them all cycle long. That way you can see what is a normal surge (+) for you and what is a - and what your test look like when your getting close to a +... when you think your getting close to a + you can take 1 around noon and another around 6-7. Then the next cycle you only have to take them for about a week around the time you started to get positives the month before. This really helped me a lot!

I had a bad experience with an OPK so personally I do not recommend it.  Last cycle I decided to try the OPK even though I had been charting.  I ended up Oing a week early (probably b/c of Vitex) and the OPK NEVER detected my LH surge.  As a result, I ended up missing my chance last cycle.  (I'm glad that I chart, otherwise I would have ended up thinking I wasn't Oing.)  After this happened I did some research and found out that some women's LH surges come and go in a matter of hours and the only way to catch it is to use the OPK twice a day.  Frankly, I don't care to spend the money.  I have also read that many women will get the LH surge, but then, for a number of reasons, end up Oing much later.  I know that many women have had much luck with OPKs, but I think we are better off charting and paying attention to our own O signs.

I highly recommend trying the First Response Ovulating Kit. It worked for me with my last 4 pregnancies. Each time I got pregnant within the second month of using it. Because my cycles are usually 30 days long, I started testing around day 13 and waited until I got a positive result before ttc. Good luck!

I happened to have success both times I used an opk and got pg on the 1st try both times. I also buy them online for 55 cents each. I buy the combo pack that come with 20 LH strips and 5 hcg strips that test at 20 miu/ml.  Lots of luck and tons of baby dust.
