Please help. Question about my 8 year old

by Weaversgirl, Feb 15, 2008 10:39AM
My son is 8. Last week he missed the whole week of school due to a really bad ear infection. Yesterday at 1:45 he didnt look so good and he was complaining of a headache. I gave him chewable childrens tylenol at 3:30. 9:30 pm last night he was running a 104.0 fever. Gave him liquid tylenol.  He woke me up at 3:30 this morning running 104 fever again. Gave him liquid advil. at 8:30 this morning he is running a 105.5! fever and vomiting and complaining of a headache, sore throat, says his arms and legs hurt. Do I need to take him to the hospital?

YES!  A fever that high can be VERY dangerous.

by wannabenana, Feb 15, 2008 12:06PM
I can't believe you had to ask that question!

by Me2mommy2b, Feb 15, 2008 12:11PM
Ummmm...I really hope you got him to the hospital and he's feeling better now.  Please let us know how he's doing.

Sounds like the flu.  My DD is home w/ it now and has been since Mon.  First symptom is a high fever and a headache...then all the other symptoms fall in line.  Hope he's better soon!

When we got to the hospital his fever was 107. They couldnt give me a explanation as to what was wrong, and sent us home when his fever finally did break. They did a flu test and all that. Everything came back negative. Saturday morning he woke up and it was like he was never sick. And he hasnt run a fever since.

wannabenana- I asked that question because I wanted to prove to my DH that yes 105.5 is a serious thing, so please make sure you know the full story before you decide to judge. Or at least give advise when you judge.

I hope your son is better. I am sorry that some people have the nerve to judge you. I thought that is what a forum is for. In my opinion only god can judge you. God Bless and I would take comments like that with a grain of salt!!

they sent him home with a 107 fever??  that is scary, glad he is doing better

by have 2 kids, Feb 18, 2008 10:07AM
I find it very odd that they sent him home when he had a fever of 107 and no explanation for it.    He most certainly would have had a grand mal seizure with a temp that high.

If my child had a fever of 105.5 my @ss would have been on the way to the ER instead of making the time to prove something to my DH.

Saj39- Thank you

Pertykitty- His fever broke while at the hospital, and he was telling the DR that he was hungry so im guessing that was why she let him go. The DR said she would do a meningitis test, but that his headache went away and that he wasnt sensitive to the light she wouldnt recommend it. So my DH and I chose not to do the test.

have 2 kids- And no he most certainly did not have a grand mal seizure and I saw for myself that the reading on the thermometer said 107. The DR said " it could be this, it could be that" but that she did not know exactly what was wrong with him.

I really and honestly appreciate the time that yall took to read and comment on this post. Personally to the negative comments, thats you and not me. And if my memory serves me correctly, I was waiting on DH to get home from work.

Once again thanks for all the comments I really do appreciate it.

I did happen to google grand mal seizure, and it said nothing about a high fever causing it. In fact it said nothing about high fever at all in the article.

I think she meant febrile convulsions or febrile seizures. That can happen very easily at a high temp that is not under control. I hope your son is doing better and keeping hydrated.

sorry - I did not mean grand mal - that is associated with epilepsy, etc.
My dr has always warned us about seizures for anything over 105.

This is the third time in 8 years that he has been sick like this (temp has never been that high before though) and with no reason as to why he was sick. Last summer I had a complete bloodwork done on him and everything came back normal.

And I knew that a seriously high fever can do damage. I completely freaked when the therm. said 107.  I really thought that they were going to keep him and even called my parents and told them to be on stand-by. The day after the high fever he was completely 100% back to normal. And still to this day has not ran a fever or anything. Still eating like a horse and everything.

I just simply dont know why every once in a blue moon he will run a high fever, with no explaination and it will go away suddenly. Thanks again for all the comments!
