Polyhydramnios.emergency C-section.birth problems.amniocentesis 12hrs prior C-s

by Zedi, Mar 19, 2005 12:00AM
I had polyhydramnios, from 22wks to 2weekspast due date. 12hrs prior to c-sect, 2500mls of amniotc fluid taken by trans-abdominal amniocentesis via a needle through to the uterus in a 40minute procedure.Apgar score 4 at 1 min and 10 at 5. She required intubation and made her first gasp at45secs,resperation established at 3mins extubation at 3.30mins(NN1). Taken to special Care Baby Unit. This was in 1977 in a London NHS. hosp, Her Her fetal scalp pH was 7.21 at 21.40 delivery at 22.15. The result being cerebal palsy( profound). Could someone please tell me if this was the best represented practice in 1977. I had not been informed regarding the polyhydramnios, either at antenatel on intrapartum care. Please can someone give me a brief on this matter. Thank you.

Im not quite sure of what you are saying you said you were not informed antenatel-  but yet  you said at 22 weeks to 2 weeks after due date you had polyhdramnios(too much amniotic fluid)
so you must have known. Did your doctor not discuss this with you? Or you ask questions?
And was this child ok or does he/she have disabilities from this?

I am wanting to know why this question is being asked now.  This supposedly happened in 1977.  That is like 27 or 28 yrs ago (sorry - math sucks) so why does it matter now.  Are you expecting a grandchild or something that may have the same thing????  Just wondering.  Good Luck to you

Hello Cinnamonheart, Thank you for your questions. I live in the U.K.,and it's only recently that I've had access to my daughter's #medical records #.With regards to questions to the medicals, I was only told between 22weeks and 28 weeks ,perhaps a multiple birth. On having scans done, they then confirmed that was not going to be so , but I had never heard of polyhydramnios until I read my daughter's record's. #December2004.# My daughter is profoundly disabled. I know this sounds horrible but I now feel like I was an experimental patient, Paranoia.. Well perhaps but ther's a lot of questions in these records and I want to try to get some answers. Better late than never.  Just to lighten the situation, one of my favourite spices is cinnamon. I used to visit my sister in Long Island every summer with my children and always brought loads of cinnibar chewing gum home with me. BYE

YE for now.

Thank you for your question. I'm well aware of the period of time that's passed, But you sometime have to put ghosts to rest. I need to arrange proper care for my daughter' future, I can't look after her myself, physically, as well anymore.I had to face this fact four years ago, and arranged for her care within a well established orginaization. I had to bring her home after 18mths due to alleged sexual, and neglectful situations.  My second daughter, also sometimes called "blondie", has given me my first grandchild 16 months ago. She's gorgeous, but then I'm biased. My third and last child, he's in his first year at University.  BYE For Now....

I looked after a girl with cerebral palasy she would now be 21 so about 1984 she was born. Her mother knew at birth  Im sure they did not do as much prenatal care back then as they do now.
Yes I would say you have every right to examine her records although that doesnt change her situation. I dont know what kind of health coverage the UK has, I know in Canada they help families with disabled children
I wish you all the best with your quest and hope you find the answers you are looking for .  Having a disabled child is challenging but also rewarding and your an angel in disguise.

On the cinnamonheart note: I was trying to find a internet name and I kept typing in names and of course they were all taken,so I was sitting in my chair looking around the room and spotted a candy dish full of cinnamonheart candies and there you have it---ME.
Good Luck

Hey I don't know about where you live, but here people can get medicaid and if a Dr. writes an order a nurse or nursing assistant can come into the home to care for patients and medicaid pays for it.

Thanks for your reply, In the U.K. We do have NHS, National Health Service. If a Doctor-Social Worker thinks you're coping, the help offered is very limited.I've been told that as I don't have a drink/drug problem, get on with it. You have to be at crisis level and I won't do that.    bye..bye..

That is awful that you can't get nursing services in your home. That is my job, working as a nurse in peoples homes. The doctors here approve cases where the parents have to work or just need to get away for a break and the people can't stay home alone.
